USB error, no USB connected

Yesterday, I installed Windows 11 and this morning I kept getting the notification that a USB device was not recognized despite no USB being connected. I tried updating and uninstall/reinstalling them. I uninstalled Windows 11. I reset my entire laptop. Nothing is working. And I'm getting the notification every 2 seconds almost rhythmically. I've plugged a device into the USB and it works but the notification still pops up constantly. I've tried muting the notifications and nothing so far has worked.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Correct. No external devices are connected or being plugged in. I have two USB connections but only one root hub shows up on my laptop and when I disable that one, the notifications stop. When not disabled, the device manager screen refreshes each time the notification sounds. Also, when enabled, both connections work,

I am using an HP laptop. Here is a of the error message. The problem getting a good ss is that the message literally only stays visible for a split second every two seconds so I have to mute my computer or disable the USB host controller or it won't stop popping up.

    Hi WilliamsAP,

Thank you for posting your concern here in Microsoft Community. We understand you need help with USB error even though no USB is connected. Let's go over with this together.

As what we understood you are getting notifications that "USB device was not recognized" even though there is no USB connected, is that correct?

We would like to ask additional information about this to properly replicate this on our end.

    • Are you using a Laptop, Desktop or ALl-in-One PC?
    • Kindly send us a Screenshot of the error

If you are using a PC there are some USB devices are built-in such as WebCam, Touchpad, FingerPrint Reader, and others so it could
be one of those or a total glitch. We can try performing this methods

Please perform this steps in order.

    • SFC scannow
      • click on Start Menu > type in Search box > COMMAND   find at top of list > RIGHT CLICK > RUN AS ADMIN > type sfc /scannow
    • Run CHKDSK
      • Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box > type CMD
      • Type the drive letter of the drive you want to check (followed by a colon), and then press Enter. For example, d:
      • Change to the root directory of the drive by typing the following text and pressing Enter. For example, cd/
      • type chkdsk/f
    • Then lets refresh the USB Stack Control Panel - Device Manager - click anywhere in the blank/white area - then VIEW - Show
Disabled Devices - look everywhere (except USB Controllers) for your device(s) (may have
none or more than one) and Right Click on it - UNINSTALL.

Control Panel - Device Manager - USB Serial Controllers - RIGHT CLICK on EVERYTHING and
UNINSTALL all except the category itself - REBOOT - this refreshes the driver and the USB stack

    Hi,

We apologize for the delay, hope your doing well.

Thank you for the Screenshot of the error message.

This is quite tricky, so at the time of this being taken there is no USB or any external drive being inserted, correct?

You can try disabling the root hub one by one to check which USB devices are causing this error message. Please use this link for complete guide

USB devices may stop functioning correctly when multiple devices connected to the same USB hub go into selective suspend (microsoft.com)

Root Hub are responsible to detect all the USB devices connected to your computer. Once your done disabling one but the error message is still there you can ENABLE it anytime and proceed checking other root hub.

    We hope this help

    Sincerely,
