Random computer blackscreen then restart

Anonymous

I'm having an issue with my display drivers becoming unresponsive randomly. The computer will blackscreen while playing audio like nothing happened, I can still talk on Discord. A few seconds later the system restarts itself. I can't reliably crash the system, it just decides at random when to crash. I have furmarked it for an hour, overvolted, underclocked, clean driver install, and tried a new PCIe slot. I've reinstalled Windows and checked every driver there is to check, I can't find the root of the problem. I'm starting to worry the card is defective. Only thing that shows up in the Eventviewer that's out of the usual is a bugcheck, here's all I have on it;

I can't understand it, the card seems like it works, It can run under heavy loads for extended periods. Anything helps, maybe I missed a pretty dumb step that'll fix it all. Thank you for your time.

I've had this issue for months, ever since I upgraded my PC.

I've done basically everything to try fix and troubleshoot this annoying issue but nothing worked for me yet.

    • I've had 2 new RTX 3060 graphics cards
    • I reset Windows 10, as suggested my Microsoft
    • I've upgraded all my parts including my PSU
    • I've contacted Nvidia support and tried all what they suggested and nothing has worked and now they haven't replied to me for over a month
    • I've enabled and disabled countless settings on Windows, Nvidia control panel, MSI afterburner... and nothing has changed

This is a short, summarised list... the full one with every detail is too long and if you ask me to try something, I've most likely done it already.

The only time it never crashed was when I used my old GTX 970 card when I was waiting for my second 3060 card.

I've been in touch with other people with the same issue and we also cannot work it out. We even compared our MEMORY.DMP files and they're almost identical, as again all the same issues we can relate to.

Its either something to do with the Nvidia Control Panel, or something Windows should fix. Something with the new cards and/or drivers is causing this issue.

I hope this is fixed sometime soon as this has gone on for too long

I thought it was fixed but as soon as I opened my yap it happened again... Same issue, VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (116). I did all the above steps, what would be the next few steps before I start hitting up Asus for a replacement card? Still no defined event that causes it to crash, it just happens. I stress tested it and deliberately tried to crash it after I followed your steps, and I wasn't able to. After a few days of stable behavior I figured it was ok. I overclocked it and stress tested it again, and it was fine. Thanks in advance for your help.

Think DDU did it. Computer has been completely stable since I used it (will reply if I'm wrong). I had a different GPU (1070 TI) installed for testing reasons and shipping delays, then I installed my new card (3080 TI) after I thought I did a clean install. Thank you, I was grasping at straws, was getting worried I had a DOA card.

Hi Colin. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

Have you tried another video card, as that would settle if it's the problem or not. I think it's likely. You can always return it if not.

The Display driver is so important here that merely updating it is sometimes not enough. So let's try everything possible to get it working correctly:

First make sure you have updated the Display driver from the PC or Display adapter maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag - from the sticker on the PC.

While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS/UEFI firmware (very important), network, sound, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

If necessary first remove the old driver using DDU https://www.wagnardsoft.com/content/ddu-guide-t... (not necessary with Microsoft Basic driver which is a placeholder if nothing else is available) and/or installing in Safe Mode with Networking (so you have internet), or Safe Mode, accessed by one of these methods: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-saf...

If new driver still won't install DDU see Lightning Leon's Answer here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-US/subject/for...

If this doesn't give you the latest or ideal driver for what you need, compare it to the driver offered by the Intel driver update Utility here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/...

or the Nvidia GeForce scanner here: https://www.nvidia.com/tr-tr/geforce/geforce-ex...

or the AMD autodect utility here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/P...

For Display issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver.

You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.

Then you will know you've tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.

Adjust the screen resolution until it fits and looks best at Settings > System > Display.

Since this issue only happens while playing audio, I'd do the same steps for audio driver, too.

Plus I'd run through the known fixes for Windows 10 Black screen crashes:

Feel free to ask back any questions. If you'll report back results for each step, including in each link, it can tell me what else we need to try. I will stick with you until it is fixed.

    Happy New Year!

    Review Event Manager entries.

Assuming a branded PC ensure drivers/bios have been updated from the PC makers support site.
