Sudden BSOD errors on Laptop after HDMI connection

Hi everyone,

I've been having BSOD errors all of a sudden on my laptop (Asus ROG Strix GL553VW /i5-6300HQ/8GB RAM/GTX 960M)

The BSODs would occur randomly or when gaming with the stop codes 'IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL' and 'DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL', and my dump analysis programs indicate 'ntoskrnl.exe' and occasionally 'intelppm.sys' as the cause. Also, I'm seeing lots of artifacting and graphical distortions on the screen, and playing games causes the BSOD to appear soon after launch or just a crash to desktop. Sometimes the system will freeze up and be unrecoverable except with a hard reset.

I'm not sure if it's related, but the issue began soon after I unplugged my laptop from an HDMI cable to my TV while on battery power. Also, disabling intelppm via regedit, booting into Safe Mode or keeping the HDMI cable connected seem to make the issue disappear.

Things I've tried:

  • Windows Upgrade
  • Running CPU and Intel Integrated Graphics stress tests with XTU
  • Testing RAM for several clean passes with Windows Memory Diagnostics, Memtest86 and OCCT
  • Reinstalling graphics drivers
  • Running SFC, DISM and CHKDSK commands
  • Reinstalling the original drivers from Asus Support

I'm at a complete loss for what to do, and I'll upload the dump files as soon as I can. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

No third-party drivers are reported by minidumps.

Even intelppm.sys is from Microsoft. Since you've already used SFC, it doesn't seem to be damaged.

However, some third-party software may use the "intelppm.sys" driver. So I suggest you do a clean boot and see if the blue screen will occur. Follow the instructions carefully.

If the blue screen does not occur after a clean boot. In this same article, there is a technique to help you identify which program is causing this in "How to determine what is causing the problem after you do a clean boot".

After finding the cause or if it does not help, return to normal boot as instructed in "Reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting".

Perhaps the article below will also help you.

    Hi Hassan_27,
I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

    Please upload the minidump files.

    These files are in "C:\Windows\Minidump".

Copy any files you have to your desktop and store them in a ZIP file. Then upload the ZIP file to the cloud (OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc...) and choose to share it and get the link.

Post the link to the ZIP file here so I can have a look.

Hi David, and thank you for your help.

I'll be sure to upload and link the minidump files as soon as I can.
