HP 100% disk usage

The computer is so slow, it makes a better door stop.

I tried all of these (if applicable): https://www.lifewire.com/fix-disk-usage-windows-10-4583918I have 16 gigs of ram and my hard drive is SS-- about 75% empty! This computer should be smoking fast!I had a d: drive with a few files; I backed them up and removed the d: drive. Now, I just have a c: drive. But, when I tried to expand c: to use the space opened up -- didn't work. Also the area opened cannot be changed -- right click only has "help" -- no other options.Anyway, I did the chkdsk and it helped a little, but almost anything quickly moves the disk
usage to 100%.

I thought maybe it was a virus, but after 40 hours of running virus scans, I no longer believe it's a virus. I suspect it's a  bug related to partitioned solid-state drives.

Hi and thanks for reaching out. My name is Bernard a Windows fan like you. I'll be happy to help you out today.

Actually, I have the same problem and by following the steps below fixed my issue, I know some of these steps are already done, you have just skipped it if you think it will have the same result.

    Method 1. Do clean boot:

A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program.

    • In the search box on the taskbar, type msconfig and select System Configuration from the results.
    • On the Services tab of System Configuration, select Hide all Microsoft services, and then select Disable all.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select Open Task Manager.
    • Under Startup in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then select Disable.
    • Close Task Manager.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select OK. When you restart the computer, it's in a clean boot environment.

Method 2. Run memory diagnostic tool: The memory diagnostic tool is a RAM test to check if there are any issues with RAM.

    • Press Windows key + R then type in mdsched.exe hit OK then restart the device.

Method 3. Set the PC to best performance:

Press Windows key + Pause/Break (or go to file explorer and right-click This PC and click properties)

Click on Advanced system settings> Under Performance click settings> Click Adjust for best performance and click OK

Note: this will reduce all appearance settings you have but will optimize the performance of the PC.

Let me know how does it go and I hope that helps.

    Bernard

Thanks for your help, but as you can see from my device manager above, I don't have a "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller" -- I do have a "Storage Controller" category.

In any case, I cannot follow the advice as given.

I believe my computer was not set up in AHCI mode, but I followed a Microsoft document to get it in AHCI mode.

Before I did this, there was no SATA AHCI Controller device.

Does anyone know how to adjust the procedures from Kapilarya.com to fit a setup like I have?

    Thanks for reading,

    Jtucker'
