Importing video from Sony Camcorder to PC running Win10

I have a Sony Camcorder model DCR-TRV17. It has an ILink output for connecting to PC 1394 port. I had to add a IEEE 1394 PCI-Express card to my PC to provide the necessary port. Hardware manager sees the new card, and says it is working properly. The PC sees the camera and has that listed. When I turn on the Camcorder, I hear the NEW connection sound alert. BUT, when I select Get Media using Adobe Premiere 2021 version, or Cyberlink, they both say the same, "device not found". The camera playback screen shows the video and sound being played back, the camera is set to VCR, the menu has d/v out set to YES.

The only thing that I can see for a possible problem is the 1394 card which shows in its manual that it is system requirement of: OS win 2000 through Windows 7 . Maybe this 2019 card does not like to play with Win10? Any ideas from those a lot smarter than me?

Good afternoon, Horace. Thank you for taking the time to reply. I have Play Memories on my computer, but it is also having trouble importing the video via the firewire 1394a Controller card (or WIN10). I had it working for a fleet minute when I saw the video playing from my Camcorder in the open Play Memories window, then I lost it and can't get it back. Every time I try to capture the video on PM, it shows videos that I have already on file instead of from the Sony Camcorder. I am still trying however, and a new 1394 Controller card is due Monday. I will keep replying on this site to help others who might be experiencing the same problem.

Good evening Greg. I had a terrible day today. The 1394 card arrived today, I installed it, and at first Device manager did not see the camera, it did see the board . Finally the Camera began showing up on Device Manager and indicated it was working OK. But, when I opened Adobe Premiere Elements, latest version in 2021, when I selected Import, I get the same message again, no camera connected. I have another brand card coming on Monday, LinksTek PCIE FireWire Card for Windows 98/2000/2003/XP/Vista/7/8/8.1/10/Server Desktop PCs(32/64bit)-IEEE 1394A FireWire 400-6Pin X3 Ports and 4Pin X

I thought I had another move, I had an old DELL Laptop, 5150, and it had a firewire port! Great! Not so fast, it would not power up even though I was using line power not battery and battery was removed. It had always worked up until a few months ago when I used it last, DEAD !

I had one more thought, someone had given me an older Dell Desktop, and it had expansion slots available and was running Win7, not 10. Tried to power that up but it could not find HD to power up. I check BIOS, HD was selected as 1st priority, but it would not POST. After several attempts of power up and down, all it would do is peep 4 times every 10 seconds. It worked fine up to about 6 months ago when I last powered it ON.

At this point I was so p*****d that I quit for the day a long day of frustration and failures. Windows 10 just does not like firewire 1394. This is very aggravating.

Hi Greg, in my research I have found that many people are having problems with firewire expansion cards (1394) that use the TI chipset. It is highly recommended to use the VIA chipset on those cards. Some cards with TI chipset work sometimes, and other times NOT. I noticed that all the newer cards that are made in 2021/22 all are using VIA chipset . I have this newer card on order from Amazon, it is due this Wednesday, and I will install this card and let you know how it works out. Even though my Camcorder is old, I certainly agree with your comment, it still should download using firewire 400 port. This is a windows 10 /software/driver/1394 card /issue for sure. I have downloaded a Legacy driver for 1394 port and trying that out in the meantime while I await the newer 1394 card.

    Thank you Greg !!

I didn't suggest going back to Windows 7! Installing in Compatibility Mode is not going back to Windows 7. Did you read the tutorial I gave which shows how to reinstall an app in Compatibility Mode so you'd know what is involved?

The Camcorder is ancient - computer years are x10 compared to human years. I gave you everything that can be done to make it work in Windows 10, so please read and follow all the guides I researched and found for you.

If you'll report back results after reading and trying the steps I gave, then I may be able to find other options. Otherwise I'd be looking at modern cam options.
