Keyboard suddenly can't type anymore, only shortcuts

Hi all!

So my father and I are having the same problem with all our Windows 10 devices. The keyboard randomly just stops typing. However, shortcuts arepossible like WIN + R, WIN + X, etc.

One device is my desktop computer, which has a Gigabyte Technology Z370P D3 motherboard.
The other device is an MSI GE62 6QD Apache Pro, which is a laptop. And my father's laptop is a Samsung NP355E7C.

I've contacted Microsoft Support about this and have tried the following steps:

  • Update Windows including the optional updates.
  • My OEM didn't have the keyboard driver, but it also was suggested.
  • The Windows installation has been checked through cmd with the DISM command and another software check command I forgot.
  • Turn off my Accessibility options in my Keyboard menu (Filter keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, etc.)

Does anyone know what's going on?

    Hello Skittluier

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We appreciate that you've taken the time to post your concern here in Microsoft Community Forum.

I understand that you have trouble with your keyboard. Let me go ahead and assist you.

In order for me to better understand the issue. I will be asking you the following:

    • What type of Windows license are you using? (Windows Home, Pro or Enterprise)
    • Is this working before?
    • Did you made some changes that causes the issue?

    Hi Jason!

    • I'm using Windows Home.
    • Yes, restarting my device always worked as a temporary solution.
    • Well, I guess not, because my father also has these issues. The only thing we have in common is that we update our Windows software.

I have tried these common solutions, but unfortunately, they haven't worked for me or my father so far.

    Best regards,

    Skittluier

    Hey Jason,

I am writing you here from my On-Screen Keyboard again, so it seems the issue is still there.

Do you perhaps have any other solutions for me?

    Best regards,

    Skittluier

    Hey Jason!

Sorry for the response I didn't give. Forgot to do that.

Anyway, I am not really in a state to make a new account for that. A colleague of yours however has recommended me to turn off "Fast boot", which I did.

As far as I know, the issue didn't return yet.

PS: Before I have contacted your colleague, I came to a temporary solution for this issue. I've used the On-Screen Keyboard for 1 - 2 minutes and suddenly the physical keyboard worked again!

I will let you know if the issue reoccurs.

    Best regards,

    Skittluier

    Hello Skittluier

Thank you for getting back to us!

My apology if none of the steps provided works for you. This time I am encouraging you to create a new user profile to properly isolate the issue. Then, on the new user profile you may use the keyboard function if it would work for you.
