The 40000 is MB. As it happens, I was obliged to re-arrange my database to cater for a change in system requirements and now I am no longer getting the error. If it has any significance, checking the Task Manager with the machine at rest shows memory of 5.1/7.9. Thanks for your interest, if the error returns I will approach the community again.
Insufficient Memory Problem
I run backups across my network to a dedicated PC. I use a simple batch file with xcopy and /e /y /d switches. One of my folders has now grown to be 769GB, with 36438 files and the program now crashes on an Insufficient Memory error. I checked the page file and found it to be 10,000 bytes. So, I doubled it to 20,000 and reran the job which now ran very quickly because it wasn't copying anything but still crashed on the same error in the same place.
The PC in question has 8.0 GB memory and has 800 GB free on the c; drive, plus 5.88 TB on an external hard drive.
Any advice will be gratefully welcomed! Thanks

Insufficient memory error means low RAM not hard drive space.
Please try to set page file to 2-4 GB in size.
