Windows 11 - Scanner needs to be powered on when windows starts.

WIndows 11 Home edition, Canoscan 5600F Scanner.

If I wish to scan a document, I need to have the scanner powered on and connected when I start my PC. If I do this then everything works fine. If I power on the scanner after windows has started, then my scanner program will run, however when I attempt a scan it reports the scanner is not connected.

My wife has a similar issue with her windows 11 laptop and a wifi connected printer. If she wishes to print a document, she must power on the printer before her laptop then it all works fine. Otherwise her laptop reports the printer as off-line, and won't print, even though it is not offline and I can print from it.

Drivers etc all updated, any ideas?

Hi Ian. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

This is one reason we need the full software package and not an app installed because it will set the scanner utility to start with Windows so it's on standby to scan from the scanner.

The driver for your scanner is here:

    https://en.canon-cna.com/support/consumer_produ...(64-bit)

Open the CanoScan software and look for setting to start with Windows. This should be automatically set when the software is installed, however.

You may want to uninstall it in App Settings and reinstall to get it set to start with Windows.

The WIndows 10 driver should work for Windows 11.

Make sure the Scanner is set to start with Windows in Task Manager > Startup Tab, and also in msconfig > Services tab.

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.

    Hi Greg,

Many thanks for your response. The scanner driver from your link is the same as the one I had installed, but I reinstalled it anyway. I checked program settings as well as msconfig/services etc with no joy. I then reinstalled the scanner program (MP Navigator EX).

This is where I feel embarrassed. I had been installing all my programs on my new windows 11 platform and must have missed this one step. At the end of the install of the scanner program, there is a message 'install complete', however this time I noticed the extra words of 'connect and power on the scanner' (which I must have missed). As soon as I did this, the scanner burst into life and I assume completed the install. The scanner now works without me having to reboot windows with the scanner powered up for it to work.

    Many thanks for your time.

    Regards,

    Ian
