PC freezes everytime after the first start

Hi!

I have had a problem with my PC for several months now and I cannot solve it alone. I appreciate your help.

Every day when I start my PC, it "freezes" after a while from starting (~30mins). When this happens, my PC does not react to any buttons nor can I move the mouse. During the freezing, I can still hear voices/music, the PC just doesn't react to anything. When the screen has been frozen for couple of minutes, the PC restarts itself or if I'm in game, I have to force reboot it. After the restart, it usually has no problems for the rest of the day (sometimes freezing happens twice, always in game and sometimes elsewhere). The next day the freezing happens again. So no blue screens, the screen just freezes. I don't know how many hours PC needs to be off that the freezing happens again, it seems very random. If the freezing happens during the game and I react immediately, I can sometimes use Alt+Tab and use other tabs normally. But this is rare and normally nothing works. If I only restart the frozen game, the freezing happens again. So the PC must be turned off each time to return normal activity.

I have reinstalled Windows 10 but the problem does not disappear. I have done all scans, diagnostics, GPU-tests etc. but nothing seems to be wrong. EventViewer shows some errors and warnings but everytime I "fix" something, the new ones just appear. BIOS and all drivers have been updated or reinstalled and I have also lowered memory frequency from 3200 -> 3000 -> 2666 MHz. The problem might disappear for day or two but it always comes back. I'm not able to find the real reason.

PC details:

-WIndows 10 Pro

-Hardware:

CPU: Ryzen R5 3600

Motherboard: Asus strix B550-I

GPU: Palit GTX 1080 Ti Jetstream

RAM: 2x 8 GB, G.Skill RipjawsV, 3200MHz

Power supply: 750W, NZXT H1 (about 1,5y old)

I put the dumps from yesterday and today on Dropbox:

I'm not very good with PCs so I apologize the simplified explanation.

Thanks!

-Tiia

    Ok, I resolved my issue.
This may not be the same for everyone here, but in my case it was related to the GPU and the PCIe slot.
    I was running a RTX 2060 SUPER (Gen3) with a riser cable (Gen3) on a X570 board with a slot that is Gen4.
When I replaced the card with a RTX 3070 Ti that was Gen4, the issue got worse.

Switching in the BIOS the PCIe x16 slot to function as Gen3 resolved the issue completely. Running without the riser cable worked fine for the RTX 2060 SUPER when the slot was running at Gen3 and for the RTX 3070 Ti with the slot at Gen3 & 4.
Switching to Gen3 with the riser cable also worked for the RTX 2060 SUPER.
That card was causing issues though when the slot was set to Gen4, regardless of having the riser cable or not.

Conclusion for what was causing my issue:
Make sure your PCIe x16 slot is set to the match the lowest generation of components using using it.
I can't comment on a PCIe Gen4 card on a PCIe Gen3 slot though, as I did not test that.

Hi all, I've had the same issue: when putting my GPU under load, the whole PC freezes, crashes and finally restarts. The mind-boggling thing about this is that this only happened on initial boot. After a restart I could strain my GPU without issues.

I managed to solve the issue for me: I'm using a fairly old PC (more than 6 years now) upgraded with a (comparatively recent) RTX 2070 Super. It seems that the battery on my motherboard finally died. After replacing the battery, I've no longer had the issue. This probably explains why it only happens on the first start. Due to the dead battery, initially the motherboard is without power and I guess this leads to some misconfiguration on the GPU side. After a restart, the motherboard/GPU configuration happens correctly, probably due to the motherboard already being powered due to the restart process.

I'm using an MSI Z97-G43 motherboard and the required battery was CR2032 3V lithium coin cell battery. I had to remove the graphics card since the battery lies hidden from view just below the GPU.

A few months before having this issue, I once had a strange situation where the BIOS just resetted and I had to reconfigure the UEFI startup in the BIOS. I guess that if you also start seeing problems with the BIOS, this is another hint that your motherboard battery is starting to wane, especially on older systems.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards

Typically when you see issues that follow this type of pattern, it can be resolved by turning off the "Fast Startup" feature. Here's how to do it:

    1. Right-click the Start button.
    2. Click Run.
    3. Type control then press OK.
    4. Click Power Options.
    5. Click Choose what the power buttons do.
    6. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
    7. Click Turn on fast startup (recommended) so that the checkmark disappears. You want this OFF.
    8. Click Save changes.
    9. Restart your computer so that the changes are effective.
