The TouchPad on my Acer laptop has stopped working

For some time the Touchpad on my laptop has been problematic. Usually when it stops working it starts again after I restart. The frequency of the problems has increased and this week it just will not work. I tried reinstalling the Driver but that has not solved anything. I have posted on the Acer Users forum and have not yet found an answer. They say something about updating the BIOS firmware since there is a newer version that addresses Synaptic touchpad issues. They said that would be a last resort as it can be tricky.

,

When I click the Properties of the Driver in Device Manager, this message is in Device Status "This device is not present, is not working properly or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)"

According to Windows Update history Synaptics driver update for Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad was successfully installed on ‎03/‎02/‎2022. Why is that not picked up in Device Manager. When I update the Drivers a message states that the best Drivers for this device are already installed. (not the best if they don't work)

Is there anything you can suggest I try to get my Touchpad working again.

I started my laptop and to my astonishment the Touchpad is working. It is not as responsive using the Touchpad as using the wireless mouse so I'm wondering if I should reset my PC would help. I'm posting a new question on that as I don't know where I would Reinstall Windows from. I only have the Windows that is on my PC.

    ImageThank you for replying.

I don't want to do a BIOS update and risk it not working after. I can use the PC with a mouse though I am finding it difficult as I use the laptop on my lap and not a desk and a loose mouse is hard to get used to. I hope someone can tell me why the Driver update, downloaded from the Acer website, is not working. Windows does not appear to know the update is there despite Windows update history saying Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad was successfully installed yesterday.

No matter how many times I uninstall and reinstall the driver for Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad the error mentioned above still exists. I used Driver Booster to check the drivers and it installed different software but that did not work either so I reverted back to the one from the Acer website. I have no idea what I can do to sort out this problem.

See above screenshot of the error.

If a branded PC ensure Bios/Driver updates have been installed from the PC maker, there may be an update shortcut, then run the SFC/DISM process.
