Photos auto rotating

Hi,

All I am trying to do is view photos in my finder. These are portrait orientation, yet anytime they open up within the viewer they are automatically switched over to landscape orientation. I have read so many forums that have yet to give a clear answer so I'd love for a simple, clear answer as to why the photos cannot and will not be viewed with the correct orientation.

To clarify, the photo files themselves are not wrong in orientation- just when trying to view them within finder/photos.

Hi Kaitlin. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

Finder is only in Apple Macs, are you using a Mac?

If you're referring to File Explorer in Windows then is it opening files in Photos app or some other viewer? Check at Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Photo Viewer app for which one is chosen.

The default behavior of the Photos viewer is it should open the file in it's correct orientation, or if you change it then it should remember the change.

If not I'll give you all fixes for the Photos app so something will work. Even if you've tried a step please do it over in order as one always works:

    1. See if you can System Restore to a point before the problem started:

    https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-r...

System Restore is your first line of defense and can take you back to a point before a problem began. If it doesn't help then you can undo it. Read about it first in the tutorial above and then try restoring to just before this started. If System Restore is not enabled on C drive do that now so it's available in the future.

If the problem repeats or System Restore doesn't work then check which Windows Updates were installed at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Updates > Update History, uninstall them there or System Restore again, then immediately check for and block the Updates with the Hide Updates tool explained here: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/8280-hide-s...

    1. Next try these fixes for Photos app:

    1. Reset and Repair Photos app at Settings > Apps > Apps & Features > Photos app > Advanced Options. Your pictures will be safe in the User Pictures folder.
    2. If that doesn't help try re-registering the Photos app from Option Two here: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3175-apps-re...
    3. And if that fails then uninstall the App in Settings > Apps > Apps & Features, restart PC, reinstall from Microsoft Store app > Hub (three dots at top right) > My Library
    4. Go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files, and also Step 17 to test a new Local Admin account. Then if necessary continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

    1. If nothing else helps you can try a Repair Install by installing the Media Creation Tool and choosing from it to Upgrade Now. This reinstalls Windows in about an hour while saving your files, apps and most settings, solves many problems while also bringing it up to the latest version which you need anyway and by the most stable method. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m....

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you'll wait to rate whether my post helped you, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
