Hi, I'm Robinson, and I’m happy to help you today.

I know how frustrating this may be for you but I'll do my very best to help you.

Here is some troubleshooting that you can try and should fix this error.

Solution 1: Download and run the Windows defender troubleshoot.

    https://aka.ms/EasyFix_WindowsFirewall

Solution 2: Check if the required services are running

1-Right-click on Start then click on Run

2-Type: services.msc and click on OK

3-Search for Windows Defender Firewall and Base Filtering Engine

4-Make sure that their Startup type is set to Automatic. To do this, double-click on the service to open up the Properties window. There, in front of Startup type, choose Automatic and click to Start

Solution 3: Reset the Windows firewall

1-Right-click on Start and select Windows PowerShell(admin)

    2-Run these commands:

netsh advfirewall reset (and press Enter)

net start mpsdrv (and press Enter)

net start mpssvc (and press Enter)

net start bfe (and press Enter)

    regsvr32 firewallapi.dll (and press Enter)

    3-Reboot your PC

Solution 4: Restore Windows to a previous point.

1-Restart your computer while holding the SHIFT button

2-The Advanced Startup menu will open on the boot.

    3-Go to Troubleshoot.

4-Now, go to Advanced Options > System Restore

5-Select a point before the problem starts and click to restore

    Hello Robinson,

My issue has been resolved! Thank you for your help.

Reverting to my last restore point did the job.

Thank you for your reply Robinson. I am attempting to troubleshoot in safe mode because I may have been hacked today.

I tried to scan for viruses but AVG doesn't work ("crashed - try to repair your installation") and Defender does not appear (under Windows security - Settings - Security providers). Maybe safe mode does not allow these?

This morning I saw a popup window: it stated that Microsoft had detected a threat and that I must contact them immediately or my computer would be disabled. I could not close the popup box or the browser tab. So I opened task mgr, hoping to kill the browser. I saw that Explorer was active - and I haven't used that browser in years, so I powered off the computer, hoping to avoid any further damage. That's why I'm in safe mode and afraid to restart without scanning for trouble.

Maybe I panicked. I've been very careful or lucky so far, maybe it's a scam. However I did just click on an unknown link a few minutes before the event this morning.

I looked for help from MS (I use Office365 but no direct access to support). AVG has a paid remote assistance program but I was not comfortable with the idea.

Anyway, Solutions 1, 2 and 3 didnot work exaucé of the safe mode. I did roll back to my last restore point from 7 days ago. Do you think it's safe to boot up normally?

Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

    Robert
