How To Setup A Login PIN

I know the question is simple, but I want to make sure that I do not run into the same problem I did with my desktop computer. When I recently had Windows 11 installed on my laptop and want to setup a login PIN, however, as you know you must setup a password before you can do that. The last time I setup a PIN on my desktop it inadvertently setup a Local Administrator account that I did not want, and it took me quite a bit of time before I could get rid of that Local Administrator account. In fact, I had to do a hard Reset on my computer (because I was afraid to use any of the techniques offered by YouTube). That hard Reset took 6 hours but got rid of the Local Administrator account.

QUESTION: I was trying to setup a PIN and it asked me for a password. After I entered the password, it said "Owner Local Account". Does this mean that I will be setting up a Local Administrator account? Because if it does, I do not want a Local Administrator account as I already have an Administrator Account. I'm afraid to proceed to that next page and I want to make sure I am not setting up a Local Administrator account. Will this setup a Local Administrator account or will I be able to proceed and setup a PIN to login?

Thanks.

Hi Bryant. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

It will set up the PIN for the account you are signed into at the moment. It has no ability to create another account when setting up a PIN.

If ti's a Local Account and you don't have a password then first set up a password in Settings > Accounts > Sign in Options. Log out and log back in to make sure it works.

Then go back to the same place to Add a PIN, test that it works, too.

If you are operating a Microsoft Account then you already have a password, just add the PIN in Settings > Accounts > Sign In Options.

Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.
