Files get corrupted while copying over Network

Hi,

When I copy Files over my Office network from my laptop to the Office desktop, they frequently get corrupted.

Steps to recreate the problem:

  1. Open a Local Folder on my Laptop in Windows Explorer
  2. Open a Shared Folder on the Office desktop in Windows Explorer
  3. Copy a pdf file from the Laptop to the Office desktop using Windows Explorer
  4. Open the copy in the Shared Folder - there is a high probability that it shall be corrupted

Corruption can be of different types - file will not open (pdf / excel / word), or images will be distorted (pdf), or it will prompt for document recovery (excel / word). This issue is also seen sometimes when printing to the Network printer, where a PCL XL error crops up.

The error / corruption is not seen always but frequently enough (25-50%) to be a distraction and irritation. It is seen both while copying through the GUI or through the command prompt. The bigger the file, the greater the chances of corruption. This problem is seen most frequently with Pdf files and with Excel files, but also occasionally with Word files. I have not tried with media files, since the laptop is being used only for word, excel and email. The file size and properties on the laptop and on the Office desktop are absolutely the same after copying. Deep scan with Malware Bytes has not identified any virus or infection.

This issue has started cropping up only after I upgraded to Windows 11 from Windows 10. I updated the Office desktop also to Windows 11, but the issue has not resolved. An online search has yielded no solutions, and any help or advise will be greatly appreciated.

Regards

    Kirk,

That was a great way to avoid acknowledging or answering the question - talk about printing problem when the user wrote about copying files.

I am having similar issue with Win 11. My files get synced via web service between my laptop (Win 10) and desktop (Win 11). Never had any problem in my old desktop with Win 10. Now I am having problems with almost all Excel files and most pdf files. Some files are getting damaged to the point they can't be opened, ie, lost forever. Not even a third-party file recovery software could revive them.

Any help or fix would be greatly appreciated.

    Dear Kirk,

As I posted, the primary problem is the file corruption issue. while copying files from my laptop to the office desktop. It occurs whenever I copy 'complicated' files to or from my laptop to the office desktop through LAN. Not sure why the copied files get corrupted sometimes, even though the original and copied files show no difference when using File Compare in Windows.

This problem started cropping up after I upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11. The printing thing is a side issue, which might or might not be related to the file copying issue. Though, as you pointed out, they both occur with complicated documents. I have updated all the printer drivers.

    Regards, Suneet

Too many variables without some trial and error...

    Possible issues:

    • hard drive issues or file table corruption
    • hard drive controller issue (causing the hard drive to write incorrectly)
    • network card issue (dropping packets)

Does this only happen between two machines? Or can it be replicated on any computer?

I'm having this problem with a single user. It has nothing to do with printing. File is scanned to email as PDF. It can be opened from the email, and once saved to the local machine, it can be opened. When it is moved to a network folder, it becomes corrupted.

    Hi Guptasuneet,

Thanks for your post in Microsoft Community.

I noticed that the error you are getting is PCL XL error, which happens during printing.

Are you using a printer to print the document?

This is usually a printer parsing error, possibly the file is too complex, the printer driver or the connection is incorrect.

You can check whether the printer connection is normal, and go to the official printer device to download the official driver. It is possible that the driver you are using is For Windows 10, but you have now upgraded to Windows 11, so some problems have occurred. Also, make sure the file is not overly complicated.

We look forward to your response.
