Uh, in case you're wondering, i can't leave the last name blank.
netplwiz does allow me to change the full name to a shorter name, but sign out & in, doesn't yield anything, it revert back to my original full name.

How do I switch from Full Name display on my log screen (even my emails via the Mail app) to my Account Name?
I believe Windows 8.1 did used my Local Account name, and I link it to my MS Account, but there seems to be no way to do this on Windows 10.
SMH, it's been 6+ years, yet I'm still finding missing feature on Windows 10 that are useful in Windows 8.1.

This isn't the right answer, as this is clearly my legal name for MS account, not nickname for MS account.
Hi Alfa
If none of the steps above worked for you, the best option may be to phone Microsoft Support in your local area, they can access our account to resolve this, there is no-one else that can access your account.
Hi Alfa
This is very strange, open the old Control Panel, at the top right of the old Control Panel, set View to icons, then go to User Accounts, can you change the user account name on that control panel page?
It doesn't work.
Once I've signed into my MS account, it quickly revert back to my full name.
It doesn't prompt me at all.
