Windows 10 Zip File Problems

Not sure what happened, but my .zip files on 10 started acting up. Some of them weren't opening at all, so I tried installing another zip program. It messed with my computer's default settings somehow, and since then if I right clicked on a zip file there would be no extract option.

I've tried resetting apps to default, uninstalling that other program I tried to use, setting the default zip program to "windows explorer," even a command prompt command, but nothing seems to be working.

    Hi Fleetmaster,

I'm Dyari. Thanks for reaching out. I will be happy to assist you in this regard.

Are you able to open it when you double click on it? If you download a new zipped file, does it open? Have you tried to open it with 7-zip?

Since you have tried all zip tools as well as Windows Explorer, kindly try to open your zipped files with another computer to make sure those files have not been corrupted.

Please let me know if you need further assistance and keep me updated.

Are there any fixes at all I could still try?

    Hi Fleetmaster-PD,

If you have problem with all Zip file, it means there is an issue with the system.

To narrow down this issue, kindly try the steps below:

1-Go to Start > Settings > Update and Security > Check for updates > Install all pending updates.

2-Uninstall any third-party security software and scan for viruses & malware with the free Malwarebytes:

3-Run Command Prompt as administrator. Type this command and hit enter:

    dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Then, type this command and hit enter:

    sfc /scannow

4-Create a new Local User account and check if the zip files would work or not:

5-You can go through this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly:

6-If the issue still persists, access this link and click on "Download Tool Now":

Then run the Media creation tool and perform an in-place upgrade.

I am not able to open it when I double-click on it currently, as I uninstalled the previous zip file program(s) I had used. I do not remember for sure if it was 7-zip or not, as I have cleared my browsing history since then.

I am not able to try it on any other computer, but this is effecting every single old and new zip file I have, even one I just downloaded as I type this.
