Why are my side mouse buttons not working after reboot or back from sleep until hit?

I have a weird issue that has been going on for months. I have a gaming mouse with 6 buttons at the left side where the thumb is at. When my laptop goes to sleep and I wake it up to use it those buttons are disabled by default until I press one of them. Then suddenly I hear the USB connected sound like I just plugged the mouse back in and then the buttons start working again. It's never been a huge issue because I know when I reboot I need to hit a button to active it. I just get super annoyed when I forget and I get into a game and I go to use the button and it doesn't work for 5 seconds until the buttons activate or whatever is going on.

When I first got the mouse it didn't do that. I don't know if it's an issue with the board on the mouse or an issue along the way with windows updates, etc. It's been happening over 6 months and I've had the mouse for about 2 or 3 years. I feel like it's a windows 10/11 issue and I don't know how to resolve it. I would like to fix this annoying issue.

EDIT I wanted to add that the right and left click plus the scroll wheel work with no issues. It's only the side buttons that don't automatically enable when rebooting or coming out of sleep. The forward and backward buttons also work fine when rebooting, etc. It's only the buttons on the left side of the mouse.

Hi Victor. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

I will give you everything that works to troubleshoot a mouse. Even if you have tried a step please do it over in sequence. I will be standing by to help as needed.

    1. Try all other ports on the PC, often the front and back will have different USB controllers
    2. When did it last work correctly? What has changed since then? Is there a System Restore point to roll back to before then? Here's how:

    https://itechhacks.com/system-restore-windows-11/

    1. Change the batteries if wireless, try another USB port, reset mouse from button on bottom if available.
    2. Try the mouse in another PC to isolate if it's the mouse or Windows causing this.
    3. Try another mouse in this PC to confirm if Windows is the problem.
    4. Try these fixes for mouse in Windows 11:

    1. Access the Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start button, choose the Mouse, then Driver tab. First try Update this Driver > Automatically, then Roll Back if available. If not choose Uninstall button, restart PC using keyboard to Ctrl Alt Del, on blue screen tab to Power Icon in bottom right, press Enter, arrow down to Restart, press Enter to restart to reinstall the driver.
    2. If this fails then from Device manager try uninstalling the USB controllers, restart PC to reinstall. First program the power button to Shut down the PC at Settings > System > Power & Sleep > Additional Power Settings > Choose what Power button does so you can do the restart from it.
    3. Is there mouse software installed in Settings > Apps > Apps & Features? Uninstall it to see if the problem stops. This is unneeded bloatware.
    4. Adjust the mouse settings in Settings > Devices > Mouse, checking all settings including the Additonal Mouse Options box - check Settings on all tabs.
    5. Try disabling Mouse acceleration:

    https://www.lifewire.com/turn-off-mouse-acceler...

Report back all results for possible other things to try.

Go over WIndows 11 with this checklist to find and fix problems:

    1. See if you can System Restore to a point before the problem started:

    https://itechhacks.com/system-restore-windows-11/

System Restore is your first line of defense and can take you back to a point before a problem began like a time machine. If it doesn't help then you can undo it. Read about it first in the tutorial above and then try restoring to just before this started. If System Restore is not enabled on C drive do that now so it's available in the future.

If the problem repeats or System Restore doesn't work then check which Windows Updates were installed at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Updates > Update History, uninstall them there or System Restore again, then immediately check for and block the Updates with the Hide Updates tool explained here: https://www.droidwin.com/how-to-stop-only-a-spe...

    1. Update your drivers from the PC maker's Support Downloads webpage for your exact model. While there check for the latest Chipset, BIOS, Sound, Network, USB3, Bluetooth and all other drivers to compare with the version/date installled for that device in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

If the drivers are not present or not working for Facial Recognition or Fingerprint then contact your PC manufacturer's Support.

    1. Run a full Windows 11 Disk Check: https://allthings.how/how-to-run-chkdsk-in-wind...
    2. Establish a Clean Boot to turn off Startup Freeloaders that can conflict and cause issues:

    https://www.makeuseof.com/clean-boot-windows-11/

    1. Download, install and run a full scan with free Malwarebyes from https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/ after enabling Root Kit scan in Scan Settings. Clean Up anything it finds and then run again. Turn off Real Time trial in Control panel to keep as on-demand scanner.
    2. Run System File Checker/DISM in WIndows 11:

    https://www.elevenforum.com/t/use-system-file-c...

    1. If that doesn't fix it then you can do a Windows 11 Repair Upgrade which reinstalls Windows while saving your files and apps in place, brings it up to the latest version by the most stable method, takes about an hour and resolves most problems: https://www.elevenforum.com/t/repair-install-wi...

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.
