If you have (or planning to have) only one drive, it will be better to buy a SSD.
And please make a good habit to create backups regularly. This will require one more drive, possibly external.

Hi, recently my computer has been refusing to boot up and it always gets stuck on the HP logo along with the spinning circle for hours. It didn't have this problem until just a few days ago. I ran a system quick test and it said the "Hard Drive Short DST Check" had failed (failure ID: PLKRWX-950B1C-GXPS3G-60VB03, product ID: 4DU42EA#ABU, Hard Drive 1). I read that this is due to the hard drive being damaged and I would have to buy a new one. The thing is I have many files I need to recover from the computer first but I can't get past the HP logo screen.
I have tried making a bootable SanDisk USB and followed all the instructions such as changing the boot order, disabling secure boot, etc. but whenever I do boot from it it gets stuck on the blue windows logo.
I've also tried getting into safe mode but with no luck no matter how many times I turn on and off the computer. Was wondering if I could at least get my files out without having to buy another hard drive?!?!
Please help! Thank you!

Hi Charl,
My name is Igor, I have 12 Microsoft MVP awards. It's a pleasure for me to help others and I'll do all my best to help you. I'm sorry you have a problems.
If you want to continue using your PC you'll need to buy a new drive anyway.
And you'll need another drive to copy your files to. This may be external drive. Unfortunately these files may be inaccessible already or partially inaccessible.
If I understood correctly, your PC even won't boot with your hard drive connected. Please try to disconnect hard drive and try to boot from USB ti check this.
Likely you will not be able to recover files yourself unfortunately. If you strongly need your files, you may look for data recovery company near you but the price will start from ~$500 likely.
I'm very sorry for bad news.
Hello, from what I understand I need just one new drive? Ive disassembled the computer and took out the drive that said Toshiba on it
Yes, you need disassemble PC partially. I suppose you may find service manual in Internet, it describes the procedure in details.
You may enter Microsoft account using another PC but you will be able to access only data stored in OneDrive site.
Hi, thanks for the reply
How do I get the hard drive out? Would I need to disassemble the computer itself?
Also is there no way to log in to another working Microsoft computer using the account I used for the faulty PC?
