WinSxS/Temp/InFlight Folder Filling Up

Hi, recently I've noticed while monitoring my SSD disk usage that the WinSxS/Temp/InFlight has filled up more than normal, the other two folders in Temp are both empty.

I've already tried using the Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup and regular Disk Cleanup to try and reclaim the space but they didn't affect the InFlight folder.

Hi and thanks for the quick reply, Greg!

Just ran Disk Cleanup as admin and it still left the InFlight folder untouched. I've also restarted my pc if that helps any bit.

At this point I'm now curious what those files are and what could be generating them in such chunks now when they weren't before. The other two folders in Temp are a bit self explanatory, but "InFlight" doesn't really paint a picture.

And I'm not one to just delete things I know I shouldn't or mess with it through third party means. As much as I want to reclaim that space I'd prefer to not destroy my pc in the process.

Hi Aries. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

Other than the DISM command you ran, you can also type in Search Disk Cleanup, run it as Admin, when it reports choose the button for System Files, then run it again and clean up what it finds.

More discussion about why not to tamper with that folder any further here:

Reading the discussions you've posted and the ones they lead to have helped settle my mind a bit more. I'm of the same mindset as the OP of the third discussion you linked, wanting to determine everything I can about the what or why before deciding even if ultimately it'll just lead to leaving it alone.

I have also recently updated to 21h2 so maybe this update just uses more of that folder than I'm used to.

    Thanks for the help, Greg.
