windows explorer stays on top when opening pdf in Edge

windows explorer stays on top when opening pdf in Edge. I need to minimize it in order to work with the window behind it. Or I can just reset focus back to Edge.

the focus changes / stays on Windows explorer when I open a pdf using Edge as the viewer. I have all current patches applied, and the problem only started recently. Perhaps an update caused it.

I tried clean boot

SFC

DISM restorehealth

Windows Files and folders trobleshooter

This is really annoying

it happens when I double click on pdf file to open in edge, and then not every time.

curiously if I turn off vertical tabs in edge the problem occurs less frequently but still more than 50% of the time

I have now installed Acrobat Reader DC and set that as the default for opening the pdfs, then the problem is resolved but I would like to continue to use Edge as a PDF reader.

I thought the problem was local to my laptop, but on testing the issue exists on my main desktop, so it is obviously a Windows Bug.

My version is...

Edition Windows 10 Home

Version 21H2

Installed on ‎15/‎12/‎2020

OS build 19044.1526

Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.4170.0

I think this may have started with the 21H2 update.. but not sure.

Any Solutions?

    Hi,

I'm losing the will to pursue this further,

I just uninstalled and reinstalled Edge exactly as described. It did not solve the problem, which I still think is Microsoft's not mine. What is even worst, the process trashed all my carefully set up Edge Apps. I now have to rebuild 30+ Apps.

If I generate this number of problems, just to resolve one... I certainly am not going to reinstall Windows on top, with all the risks to my configuration and hardware-specific drivers.

    Hmmm..

Thanks @Derrick19, but the migration of data info is not usable. The "Documents and Settings" folder does not exist in Windows 10, I think it was last used in Windows XP !! This also applies to the NTUser.dat files.

Any more help? also I don't think I'd have enough space to duplicate all of my user files as instructed. My menu configuration and installed program file data would also be messed up.

Looks like I'll have to abandon viewing pdf files in Edge, unless anyone has better ideas.

BTW I see lots of other people also have the same issue, I'm convinced its a bug in Edge or WIn 10

    Thanks

    Hi,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I had tried clean boot to no effect.

I have created a second account and the problem seems resolved for now. But I now need a guide on how to attach all my data, programs and menu configs plus stored passwords to the new account. A massive task it seems. Unless there is an easy way to attach the new account to all my config it seems to be not worthwhile just to open pdfs in Edge without difficulty. I am happy to make registry change to resolve the issue in my existing account, perhaps copying a key from the new account to the original if someone could steer me in the right area.

    Hi

    Thanks for your reply.

If you want to transfer to a new account for use, you can follow the steps below to transfer your account profile and information.

Once you have transferred your account configuration, you can check if your account password still exists in edge.

The specific migration steps are as follows.

1: Press Windows + E to pop up Windows Explorer. Select the View tab, click on Options and select Change folder and search options.

2: Uncheck the option Hide protected operating system files (Recommend) and check Show hidden files, folders, and drives.

3: Navigate to the folder Documents and Settings present in Local Disk (C).

4: If you are unable to open the folder, it means you have no access to it. Right-click on it and select Properties. Click on the Security tab, highlight Everyone and click Advanced so we can change the permissions. Check Full control and click Apply. After saving changes, exit the window. You will now be able to access the folder.

5: Select the username of the user from whom you are copying the files from (your original account). Select all the files except the ones listed below:

    Ntuser.dat/Ntuser.dat.log/Ntuser.ini

Copy all the files you just select.

6: Now navigate to the new user profile which you just created using the steps listed above (C:\Documents and Settings\New_Username folder). Click Paste. If you are asked whether you want to replace the file, press Yes.

7: Log into the new user account and see if all the settings are there according to your requirement.

There is no way to accurately determine what causes this problem for you, but the probability is that there is a problem with the setting parameters of the edge itself, so you can try to fix the edge. change the adobe browser there is no problem, you can also try to reset the edge to see if there is an effect.

You can also try updating edge to see if the problem can be fixed.

Feel free to post back if you need more assistance. ^.^

    Hi

    Welcome to the Microsoft community.

You could first try a clean start to rule out that a third-party program is causing the problem.

(Disclaimer: A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It helps to determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program and to isolate the cause of a problem. These steps of "clean boot" might look complicated at first glance. However, to avoid any trouble for you, please follow them in order and step-by step so that it will help you get you back on track.)

If the above methods do not work, you could try creating a new account and see if it works?

You could also go into Safe Mode with Networking and see if the same thing happens again. This allows us to better determine why the problem is occurring.

You are welcome to reply to this topic at any time, and sincerely thank you for your support of Microsoft products and services.

Feel free to post back if you need more assistance. ^.^
