Windows 10 closes applications while in sleep mode.

I have a new desktop PC I just built. Everything seems to be running fine, except that Windows will often (but not always) close all running applications while in sleep mode. I can't tell if it's doing a full restart or not. Sometimes it asks for my password on wake and not other times.

I finally solved this on my own, as usual.

I tried going to support.microsoft.com, rather than answers.microsoft.com. That site suggested I go through the Windows 10 "Get Help" application, which walked me through some troubleshooting steps.

At one point, it suggested I go to Windows update and try downloading and installing through there (rather than waiting for the machine to reboot and try doing it itself). The first update path (21H1) was unsuccessful, as usual. However, I then tried skipping over that and going right to 21H2, which was also in the download list. That later patch installed successfully, got me up to date, and I haven't had any issues since.

    Thanks for all the "help".

    Thanks, Bernard.

I tried the first three steps (so far) and the problem still reproduces. It's sometimes difficult to tell, because it only happens about 30-50% of the time.

Today I was lucky enough to witness it live, and now I see what's happening.

Windows is trying to force an update while the PC is asleep. The update fails with "cannot apply update, rolling back changes" and the computer reboots. That's why all my programs are closed.

    The new questions are:

    1. Why is the update failing?
    2. How do I prevent Windows 10 from force updating? (it's really annoying)

Hi and thanks for reaching out. My name is Bernard a Windows fan like you. I'll be happy to help you out today.

I understand the issue you have, nothing to worry I am here to help, I know some of these steps are already done, you have just skipped it if you think it will have the same result.

Method 1. Restore default power options

-Press the Windows key + R then type:

    powercfg -restoredefaultschemes

    -Restart PC and check.

    Method 2. Run power Troubleshooter

    • Press the Windows key + R then type:

    msdt.exe /id PowerDiagnostic

    • Click OK then follow the prompt to run the power troubleshooter

    -Restart the device after

    Method 3.

Open Control Panel> Click Hardware and Sound > Click Power Options> then click Choose what the power buttons do > Click Change settings that are currently unavailable> Check Sleep (or uncheck then check it again)

    Click Save Changes then restart.

    Method 4. Do clean boot:

A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program.

    • In the search box on the taskbar, type MSConfig and select System Configuration from the results.
    • On the Services tab of System Configuration, select Hide all Microsoft services, and then select Disable all.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select Open Task Manager.
    • Under Startup in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then select Disable.
    • Close Task Manager.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select OK. When you restart the computer, it's in a clean boot environment.

Let me know how does it go and I hope that helps.
