One drive renaming game settings files, (Fallout4.ini Fallout4Custom.ini Fallout4Prefs.ini) in two different computers.

Hello hello.

So I have different computers and they use different kind settings because hardware.

One drive changes ini-files names like Fallout4-(computer name).ini

Well, this is not okay.

These ini-files are in OneDrive - Personal/Documents/My Games-folder, where steam puts them.

How to keep My Documents syncing, and still keep my game preference files named as they should be?

I know people have same kind problems with different games, but I haven't found answer yet.

    Okay, Juhan.

If they are different files but the name is the same, it's understandable that OneDrive has that behaviour. Again, we identify files by their names, so if they have the same, it's just confusion for the device.

Again, and due to the limitations of OneDrive, it's not possible to exclude specific folders from backing up, and all the games have a specific path where they save their save files, so it's impossible to change that route either.

You can however take a look at the solution here, to see if you can exclude .ini files from syncing: https://superuser.com/questions/1568015/exclude...

If it doesn't work, I'd strongly recommend you to stop using OneDrive, and start using Drive for Desktop which allows you to separately choose what folders and files to sync. You can find it here: https://www.google.com/intl/en/drive/download/ . OneDrive just allows you to sync My Documents, Desktop and some other folder, but doesn't let you choose subfolders inside those, so that's a pity.

Let me know how that goes! :)

    Hi.

"Consider that there can't be two files with the exact same name in the exact same folder. Isn't there any way you can separate them in two folders?"

Isn't this the reason why clouds don't normally sync system files? My Games- folder contains system specific configuration files and saves-data. I don't know why such folder is included in synced documents-folder.

"Why exactly are you using this method? Are you running the same backed-up instance in the two devices, or you're just backing everything up?"

My computers are heavy gaming rigs, and not very easily movable. They are different places, and I like the opportunity use my digital data without using some memory block device or log in to cloud with browser, every time I need some document.

Microsoft pushes to use OneDrive so hard. It's funny that when you do, it gives you of this kind extra problems.

I would be happy if there was even some kind fix, to re-route My Games-folder some other place, but games should still find the data from there. Do you know is that possible?

    Hey Juhan.

Consider that there can't be two files with the exact same name in the exact same folder. Isn't there any way you can separate them in two folders?

Imagine if one device needs to read its .ini. If there are two exact same .inis, how would the device be able to recognize which of the two it has to read? It's impossible to do something else, rather than just separating each device in a different folder.

Why exactly are you using this method? Are you running the same backed-up instance in the two devices, or you're just backing everything up?

    Hey there Juhan!

My name is Miguel Ángel and I'm an independent advisor, also a Microsoft user just like you! I'll try to help you today with your issue.

This article relates to the issue that you're suffering, so maybe it helps: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/dupli... .

By what I've read, this happens when OneDrive can't really guess which of two different devices has the latest version of a file, so it saves both and adds the name of the user. As Greg says in https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/musicandvid... , maybe you could use Google Drive Backup.

I'll wait for your reply! Don't worry, everything will be okay :)

    Hi Thanks for reply.

Problem is that files are both same name, but they are configuration files for different hardware.

So I need every computer have it's own ini-files, and one drive should not rename those files.

Because if I have those renamed files, I have to first close one drive and second, remove computer names from 6 to 9 files and/or move other computers files temporary to some safe location, so that they don't get deleted or something.

All this is frustrating job to do, if I just like to have little gaming session.

I have one drive premium, and I very much prefer continue to keep using it, but how in earth is this kind basic gaming thing overlooked so badly...I'm wondering?
