Grey screen on monitor 1 when videos are being played.

So whenever a video comes on (browser or steam or other programs that show video's) i sometimes have the monitor go completely grey. My second monitor, however, stays normal. Windows 11 continues to run as normal, but my 1st monitor is now completely grey and unusable.

To fix it temporarly, i open up my display settings on the second monitor. Enable HDR, which my monitor and videocard support, and the screen comes back. Then i turn off HDR and it works as normal again.

Updating Windows 11 and updating my videocard drivers have no effect. Also, this problem only seems to occur in windows 11. I have not have this issue when i temporarily switched back to Windows 10. Also any linux distro i tried does not have this problem.

Thusfar i have narrowed it down to being a codec issue that windows 11 itself uses to play video's. Since i have this problem with different browsers, Steam, Epic Game Store and the Xbox app, i'm assuming it must be a core codec and not a plugin codec that the respective apps are using. I have not been able to figure out which one or what i can do to permanently fix it. I dont wanna start messing around with codec packs for now.

Does anyone have this issue and, if so, what did you do to address it.

    Hi

    Thanks for your reply.

In fact, the problem of screen darkening caused by HDR is known to exist, and there may be no known way to completely solve it. So it can only be reset by readjusting the resolution or switching HDR once. I can understand your mood. Any suggestion you make is valuable. You can click Win + F for feedback and wait for repair. Thank you for your understanding and support of Microsoft products.

    Best regards

    Hi

    Welcome to the Microsoft community.

From your description, I judge that it is because you have turned on global HDR, but the system is not perfectly compatible with HDR, resulting in the gray screen. If you encounter all SDR contents and applications and the display brightness is too high or too low on the display supporting HDR, you can drag the slider under "HDR / SDR brightness balance" in the HDR option to obtain the correct brightness balance between HDR and SDR contents. This method is indeed effective. It can adjust the brightness of the desktop, but it will obviously make the whole picture overexposed or underexposed. In fact, the problem of gray and dim color of the desktop as a whole has not been solved, but it can make some visual improvements.

Microsoft maybe did not consider the current status of the display in the color gamut conversion part, so this problem will appear. Windows11's interface actually uses sRGB, but after opening HDR, the color gamut of the display will be converted to bt2020. Therefore, Microsoft will also use LUT conversion method to specially set the original sRGB color gamut to bt2020 to meet the display requirements of the display, otherwise the whole picture will show extremely bad colors.

But from your description, you usually need to use HDR, so I think this problem may not be solved in a short time.

In general, For now, HDR is not perfect. You can give feedback according to win + F and look forward to Microsoft's official repair and update as soon as possible. Any suggestions you have are valuable.

    I await news.

    Hello Derrick,

As english is not my native language, i'm probably missing something. With Global HDR setting, do you mean the setting in Windows? So if i run windows with HDR enabled, i will not get the grey screen? Because i usually run windows without HDR on, because of the low brightness.

As far as i am aware, my problem is not with HDR specifically. I just use the function to "reset" my first monitor so i get my picture back. What i can try to do is if it happens again, is to change the resolution of the monitor to reset it that way and if it gives the same result, the HDR thing is not actually the problem.

    I will keep you posted.
