Error code 0X80096004 is stopping my computer from downloading Windows updates. Can anyone help?
Hi Lary636
Okay so lets fix this problem
let me include few fixes that solves this problem:
Method 1
For windows 10 and 11 open start menu> search> troubleshoot settings> other Troubleshooters> the click run on windows update
if that didn't fix then go with other 2 methods
Method 2
Lets clean the Windows Update temporary cache folder:
- Hold your windows-key pressed and hit "R" key simultaneous.
- A small new windows will appear.
- Type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore in this new window and click OK.
- This will open Windows Explorer on the correct location.
- Delete all contents of this folder. (Hint: Use Ctrl + A to select all files and folders)
Now we will start the Windows Update Service again:
- Switch back to the windows Services.
- Locate Windows Update.
- Right-click on it and choose Start.
Method 2
- Click Start and start typing on your keyboard for "cmd".
- In your search results cmd should show up with an black icon.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- If you are prompted for the admin password, enter the password and click OK.
- A new completely black windows will open. You can type commands directly into this window.
- Type sfc/scannow and press Enter.
- This process will take a long time. You can minimize this black windows and work on.
Once the SFC process is completed restart the computer and check windows update if that fixed it.
Hope it works
Thank You
