HDMI cable not detected by computer

I want to connect to a monitor or TV with HDMI. No signal to either. Monitor says "no signal coming from your computer".

I have tried with no success:

  • HDMI directly into Nvidia 980 HDMI slot
  • HDMI directly into motherboard slot, Intel i6700k with integrated graphics
  • HDMI indirectly into HDMI(female)-to-Displayport(male) adapter, into Nvidia 980 Displayport slots

I have verified:

  • Cable plugged into second computer, connected fine to monitor and TV
  • Tried different HDMI cable, same results on both computers
  • Displayport slots on Nvidia 980 work on monitor with DP-mDP cable
  • Both monitor and TV are 4k. Output is 4k on other computer, and 4k using Displayport on this computer.
  • Used newest graphics driver for Nvidia 980
  • Used old graphics driver (2020) for Nvidia 980

All cases, other computer connected successfully and this computer received "no signal"

Other than the hardware checks and the driver checks, I am not sure what other steps I should try.

Since it applies to both Nvidia 980 and motherboard, and since Displayport works but HDMI through Displayport doesn't work, I feel like there is some issue in the computer working with HDMI signals.

Thanks, Ahmad

    1. I only used Displayport until I just now bought a new computer, so I don't know.
    2. Gigabyte GA-Z170-HD3P

Would a malfunctioning HDMI port also cause the adapter to the Displayport port to not work either? I have not tested using the adapter on the new computer though.

Adapters are not always the best way to isolate issues, since sometimes they might not work properly. Ideally we should always have cable with the same connector from both ends (e.g HDMI-HDMI cable, DP to DP).

It's extremely peculiar to have both HDMI ports on the GPU and on the motherboard malfunctioning, they are two different hardware components.

    1. Is the Integrated Intel Graphics card detected in Device Manager?
    2. Can you test the DP adapter on the other PC?

Perhaps, can you swap graphics card from this PC to another one?

    Partially solved:

I followed up in BIOS to see why Integrated Graphics was not detected in Device Manager. There was an option to enable integrated graphics, previously set to AUTOMATIC. I set it to ENABLED explicit. Now HDMI works fine connecting to the motherboard. I'm limited to 4k@30fps which currently limits my options for using the computer as a HTPC, but I can safely assume the HDMI port on the 980 is dead unless tested otherwise. For higher resolution, I'll look into a DP(female)-to-HDMI(male) adapter for the TV, but for this thread the issue is solved.

Greg, your first link Method 7 is basically what I did, so I'll give you credit for the link too in case it helps someone else.

    Hi Ahmad,

It seems that the HDMI port in your graphics card is malfunctioning.

You may ask then, why is the HDMI port on your motherboard is also not receiving signal, it may be due to BIOS limitation. While there's a discrete graphics card plugged in, the integrated graphics chip may be disabled.

Please provide information regarding the following questions:

    1. Was the HDMI port working previously? Were there any changes before the issue started?
    2. What is your motherboard model name?

    Thanks,

    Best Regards
