However, DosBox would work (finish initialization) if the compatibility mode is further configured to a "reduced color mode" as the following. Under the reduced color mode, the DOSBox command-line window can load successfully.
DOSBOX could not run on Windows 10 64-bit, but...
Observed on System: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, Version 21H2, OS-Build 19044.1586
unlike the previous version of Windows (most likely 32 bits), DOSBOX cannot run out-of-the box from a fresh installation.
configuring the compatibility mode to "windows vista (service pack 2)" do not help either.
when one tries to run DosBox, one would get a frozen state with a black command windows as the following:

2022-04-10T19:27:22+00:00 Thanks for sharing your experience, --dashdotdot :)
Well, my windows is of a fresh installation. After some trial and errors, I figured out that the "reduced color mode" is the decisive parameter to make it work on my system (if the stock dosbox config is used). The compatibility mode is not a must.
However, after tweaking the dosbox config according to this page: DOSBox resolution: full screen, window size, clear graphics (dosgamers.com),
my dosbox can run without the "reduced color mode". So, looks like it was the suboptimal config from the dosbox installation that caused the problem.
With that, I wouldn't say that it was wrong, coz as long as something is working fine, why bother?
I think we might have different hardware and windows versions (I have a Win Pro, and that may have slightly different configurations, for instance)
In any case, glad that you shared your experience coz that sparked my curiosity for the tweaking :) Thank you!

2022-04-09T13:49:15+00:00 I've already used Dosbox with Windows 10 64 bit. It works without anything special and the download even states Windows 10 as a working OS. Your Windows installation is messed up or your dosbox config is.
Using compatibility settings on something that is Windows 10 compatible is the wrong way to go.
