Win10 Wierd Crashes, WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR

For about the past two weeks, I have been experiencing weird crashes on my computer.

Description:

During each crash, the computer will first freeze for a short amount of time (ranging from less than 1 second to a few seconds), and then a blue screen will appear for less than 0.5 seconds (without the stop code, the error-check percentile complete, and the QR code), and then the missing information would appear for a very short amount of time (about 1-2 frames on my camera) and the computer shuts down. Sometimes, the computer will restart on its own; at other times, the computer will attempt to restart and the hardware is running, but the screen would not light up and I would have to press the reboot button manually. After restarting, I cannot find any event in the event log recording this crash; also, I cannot find any dump file related to this crash.

These crashes occur almost exclusively when a specific game is running, which is Genshin Impact; when I am playing Genshin Impact, this error occurs about every 10 to 30 minutes; this error has only occurred twice when I am not playing Genshin (once in Dota and once when only Chrome is running). Each time before the crash, I would notice that a type of sound disappears (e.g. the bgm or sound effects), and shortly after that (about 5 to 10 seconds) the crash occurs.

Attempts for fixes:

I tried to restore my system to a point before the crashes, but this did not help. I also tried to update my graphics (Nvidia GeForce) and audio interface (Steinberg) drivers which also did not make any difference.

I ran several system stability tests, including the AIDA64 system stability test for all components, FurMark, and CPU-Z's stress CPU; all these tests failed to find instabilities in the system. I have not attempted to physically replace hardware since I do not have any spare parts.

I suspect that these crashes are hardware-related, since restoring the system did not help with the problem; however, I don't know how this would explain the strong relationship between the crashes and Genshin Impact (I have not had any problem with this game before).

Have anyone had a similar experience with an audio effect glitching out in a game before the system crashes? Does anyone have an idea on which component might lead to this kind of crash?

Thank you for helping.

Hi Shaobo. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

    1. Try these fixes for WHEA Uncorrectable error crash when playing Genshin Impact:

    https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/solved-gen...

    https://linustechtips.com/topic/1278484-3070-an...

    1. Run the MS Store apps troubleshooter at Windows Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional Troubleshooters > Windows Store Apps.
    2. If the above steps don't help then go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files, and also Step 16 to test a new Local Admin account. Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

    1. Update your drivers and BIOS/UEFI firmware from PC or motherboard maker's Support Downloads web page, using the full model number, Serial Number or Dell Service Tag on sticker. Compare the latest drivers available for download with the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start button. Make sure you have the latest BIOS or UEFI firmware, Chipset, Display (Video), Sound, USB3, Bluetooth, Network and all other drivers, or else download and install the latest now.

Updating drivers from the Device Manager or Windows Update is rarely enough. The most basic thing we need to learn to maintain a PC is keep the latest manufacturer's drivers installed from their Support Downloads web page.

    1. If nothing else works then do a Repair Install, by installing Media Creation Tool, open tool and choose to Upgrade Now. This reinstalls Windows while keeping files, programs and most settings in place, is the most stable method to advance to the latest version, and solves most problems. https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/software-downlo...

    HARDWARE TESTS -

    1. Test the memory using WIndows Memory Diagnostics: https://www.techrepublic.com/article/how-to-det...

If problems are found then test the RAM overnight to stress it with the best bootable test memtest86, following this guide to test both sticks and slots:

    https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/how-to-test...

    1. Test the hard drive or SSD with diagnostics:

    https://www.lifewire.com/free-hard-drive-testin...

    https://mashtips.com/ssd-health-test-and-perfor...

HP and Dell have hardware diagnostics triggered by tapping the ESC or F12 keys respectively as you power on.

Best is to use the HDD/SSD manufacturer's own if there is one, otherwise use Seatools bootable long test: http://blog.nowherelan.com/2013/04/04/boot-seat...

Follow this up with a full Disk Check from the Command Prompt in Repair Mode or from bootable media: https://www.groovypost.com/howto/check-hard-dri... if necessary from the Command Prompt at boot: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanc...

    1. Stress test the rest of your hardware:

    https://techguided.com/best-tools-to-stress-tes...

If no hardware problems are found then look over this tutorial for a gold standard Clean Install which compiles the best possible Install of Windows which will stay that way as long as you stick with the tools and methods given, has zero reported problems, and is better than any amount of money could buy: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

The reason I suggest this is that no one who has adopted the install in the above link has ever come back to report further problems I've seen, including another version failure. This is because everything in Windows 10 is dependent upon the quality of the install, especially Version Updates which will choke on lesser quality installs, and there is no possibility of problems if you stick ONLY with the steps, tools and methods in that tutorial.

It is also one of life's great learning experiences that will permanently make you the master of your PC because you will learn everything that works best and how to keep it that way.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions. Please report back feedback for all steps given so I know what else to suggest if necessary.

After dissembling and reassembling the PC, this problem has not occurred--that is, for the past three days, with about 2 hours total of Genshin Impact gameplay and several hours of heavy usage. Thus, I speculate that this problem is resolved.

I suspect that this problem is caused by an overheating CPU, since I found some people saying online that WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR is often caused by overheating, and that the old thermal paste is dry. However, this claim is not backed up by CPU temperature data when the computer crashes, which was not exceedingly high (about 65 degrees Celsius); I suspect that this normality might be the result of some faulty sensors.

I'm glad to hear of your progress.

You can install CoreTemp to monitor your temps from the System Tray and set Overheat Protection to sleep or hibernate if it reaches max termperature: https://www.thewindowsclub.com/core-temp-monito...

Let me know if I can help further. I'll stay subscribed to this thread in case you need anything else, until the system locks it in a few months.
