I have a Dell laptop that is 6yrs old, with 8gb ram and i5 processor. I have winseos 7 before and it is really working smoothly. I just deciced to upgrade to windows 10 but now it takes some time before it became usable.

I thought I don't have enough ram so I upgraded it. But still it's still really slow. I can't get it back to windows 7.

I don't know what to do, any suggestions?

8GB of ram is fine for Windows 10. That's not the real issue. The CPU performance can slow everything down a lot. A low end CPU to a slightly better CPU can make applications open much faster for example. That's even with an SSD. And an SSD instead of a HDD will also very much improve things.

You really need to look at the specs and see if you can upgrade the CPU or SSD. But, the computer is old enough that a new computer would be the correct way to go.

Windows 7 is expired and out of service. It is not correct to use it for an everyday computer. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

I really see three correct choices. A) Live with Windows 10 on that computer, B) get a new computer, C) use a lightweight Linux distro on that computer instead.

You can try tweaking Windows 10. Mostly go into power settings and use performance or set whatever plan to 100% min & max for processor usage. Anything other than that will mostly be 3rd party software running in the background eg the amount of and AntiVirus software causing performance impact. That will be the bulk of what you can do. OCing could but the computer will die faster. An SSD instead of an HDD if not already will be fine as you can always use that in another computer or plop it into a USB enclosure.

But, if the specs of eg the CPU are low enough, a new computer properly picked will yield far greater performance gains than any of this with the current old computer. Badly picked is another thing lol.
