Extremely strange display problem that persists through clean windows install.

I've seen some amazingly helpful posts here, so I was hoping someone might have an idea. Although this problem is VERY strange.

Somehow I have caused an issue that remains through fresh windows installs. I was trying to get an old EA 233 NEC monitor as my second screen, and it wasn't working. Very many problems happened, including my display problem which I'm about to talk about. So much that I decided to reinstall windows and give up.

Here's where it gets weird. I wiped my old hard drive, with the NVMe sanitation tool in BIOS. With my new windows installation, I did not attach my EA 233 monitor. Somehow though, on my new windows install I booted into safe mode, and it used the same display settings that my EA 233 monitor SHOULD use if it's working, except this was on my main screen! On windows display settings, it said the screen was set to 64 hertz, even though my main screen only goes up to 60 hertz! And I could not change the hertz or resolution! The colour is also very awful and green.

I've given up on trying to get the monitor to work, but I still want answers. So this is a shot in the dark, it really is, but does anyone know how the **** this is even possible? How can a problem like this persist through a fresh windows install?

    Hello my friend, thanks for all the helpful links! I have tried every one of these solutions before though, and I can not find a fix!

    The only fix I have not tried is to replace my display cable. I think I'm going to try this... Unfortunately my monitor only has a display cable and legacy connections, no HDMI! I have plenty of HDMI cables lying around, but no display port cables. 😂

    I'll let you know if a new cable fixes my problem, it may be a couple days though. Thanks again for the help. :)

    When you searched the motherboard or PC maker's site for your drivers, you should see a section for BIOS/UEFI firmware, to compare with the one presently installed in UEFI Setup. I would always have the latest. Just follow the instructions closely on the download site as there can be no power loss during flashing of the BIOS.

    Okay, I seem to have made some progress. I seem to have the correct drivers now for my 223 WM motitor, and looking in settings it also wants to display in 60 hertz, which is good. It is also detected by my PC now as a 223 monitor, which also has never happened before. I can now select both of my monitors in Display Settings and adjust settings for each of them.

    The screen still doesn't want to receive a video signal though, saying "Display port out of range" and "Display Port No signal"

    I know that monitors can say out of range when the hertz and display resolution doesn't work on the monitor, but now that I'm able to adjust these things in Display Settings, I can say 100% it is set up to the correct resolution and hertz!

    Thanks for the help my friend. I should have made some things more clear, I was just frustrated and felt like going crazy! I'll try to answer your questions here.

    By hard drive, I meant my NVMe drive, which is my only one I use in my PC. I wiped it in BIOS and then the problem persisted when I reinstalled windows 10 home from a USB stick.

    Can you explain a bit more about looking for BIOS/EUFI firmware exactly? I don't completely understand that, but I'd be interested in updating my BIOS if possible.

    I'd already tried changing my resolution on my main display to suit the NEC monitor, which runs at 1680x1050 resolution, and that didn't seem to help!

    When I got my problem after re-installing windows, I had not updated my graphics drivers, I was still using windows default display drivers. I just installed my AMD adrenalin display drivers, and I'll try to hook the screen up one more time, and I'll tell you if it works!

    Hi MCB. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

    You said you wiped your old hard drive with an NVMe utility? Why use that for a hard drive? How many drives do you use? Were all of the other drives unplugged except the target drive for install, and was that drive itself wiped so that it only showed Unallocated Space when you booted into the installation media > Custom Install? Did you choose the Unallocated Space and then click Next to auto-create and -format the needed partitions and begin - this makes it foolproof?

    If the old screen that vexed you was unplugged during all of this, and you were that thorough, then it should not be involved.

    The Display driver is so important here that merely updating it is sometimes not enough. So let's try everything possible to get it working correctly:

    First make sure you have updated the Display driver from the PC or Display adapter maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag - from the sticker on the PC.

    If necessary first remove the old driver using DDU https://www.wagnardsoft.com/content/ddu-guide-t... (not necessary with Microsoft Basic driver which is a placeholder if nothing else is available) and/or installing in Safe Mode with Networking (so you have internet), or Safe Mode, accessed by one of these methods: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-saf...

    While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS/UEFI firmware (very important), network, sound, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

    If this doesn't give you the latest or ideal driver for what you need, compare it to the driver offered by the Intel driver update Utility here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/...

    For Display issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver.

    You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.

    Then you will know you've tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.

    Adjust the screen resolution until it fits and looks best at Settings > System > Display.

    Then expedite WIndows Updates, including Optional, to see if a new monitor driver is pushed.
