Hello, I have been thinking of starting to mine crypto with the free application salad. However, I have been doing research, and some people say that is is malware that will harm my PC. Yes, it does have a verified publisher, but that doesn't sell me. I would like a professional that I can trust to help me with this situation.

Hey Jude. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

Here are user reviews of Salad on trusted 3rd party review sites:

Tom's hardware is a highly respected tech hardware website with a review here:

Users explain more here about how it generates false positive virus infection:

In conclusiion I would say if you are looking for Crypto Mining then it is legit and not a virus, but it is a Crypto Miner which have their own downsides explained fully in the above links so this is enough for some AV's to flag them and for them to be generally considered risky. Use AYOR!

Set a System Restore point and System Image Backup before you download or install any software like this:

Also this is a good opportunity to download and install free Malwarebyes from https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/ and AdwCleaner from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcle... which are the most powerful free scanners out there right now and good tools to keep on hand.

Clean up whatever they find, restart the PC and then check to see if any System files were damaged: https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-use-sfc-scannow...

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.

Jude, that's something you would have to decide for yourself. I'm not going to advise you to install crypto-mining software on your PC because it's not something we do or support here at all. I focused on your question about whether its safe or a virus and found everything available to answer your question, so you can decide for yourself if it's something you want on your computer.

As it explain in one of the links I gave you, it uses your computer to create one of the most powerful supercomputers there is to mine Crypto, which is a very murky area that I would personally not want to mess with unless I did a lot more research to understand it even better. Just from what I've seen here it has convinced me it's not a virus or illegal but is still a somewhat questionable activity to let my computer be used for.

I hope that helps. You have to decide for yourself.

Sorry, so I'm still unsure. Yes, those are very positive reviews, but you still tell me to use at my own risk. Is it safe or not?
