SysMain keeps randomly spiking CPU usage from 0% to around 11%. It’s happening every few minutes and it’s getting irritating. There aren’t any viruses or any other malicious software. Whats going on?? Is it normal??

    Hi retrobit64

I am Dave, I will help you with this.

SysMain is related to the Search Indexing process in Windows, it was previously known as SuperFetch, it is known to be very resource hungry and the best option is to disable SysMain, it is not required.

Click your Start Button, then just type Services and press Enter.

Scroll down the list of services to find SysMain, then double click that service.

Stop that service and set its Startup type to disabled.

Save that setting and restart (not shut down) your PC.

    Hi retrobit64

Yes, that is correct, that process runs in the background of Windows and is supposed to make launching apps faster, by analyzing your app usage and caching app data.

If you find that process is interfering with the performance of your PC or slowing down your PC, then you can safely disable that service, if it is not affecting performance, then you can leave that service active.

Hi Dave, thanks for the response. So to be clear, if I don’t shut off the service, then these CPU spikes are to be expected and they’re normal?
