My monthly backup to my Toshiba external hard drive is starting to mess up

For the past 5 years I've used a Toshiba external hard drive to do my monthly backup and it has worked fine. I attempted to a backup two days ago and I received 2 error codes. I have run it numerous times and keep on getting 2 error codes.--0x80780034 and 0x80042308. The error codes have changed but still cannot run my backup. I've gone over the information and still have this problem. My computer has 1 terrabyte hard drive and the Toshiba is the same size. For 5 years it has worked beautifully. Also, I requested that the external drive be examined for any issues. The answer I received was that the drive needed repair and the message was that I close the dialog box and repair the drive. I went into disk management and attempted to do just that. I don't know if I did any good to the external hard drive. I had forgotten to mention that part. I also did a sfc /scannow and it found some corrupt files and they were repaired

But it isn't cooperating this month.

I am getting very frustrated and running out of ideas. I have run chkdsk /r /f and it still is giving me trouble. The back up would start and right at the end of the backup it faulters.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Ethel Korman

    Good day! efkorman,

To investigate further, the following solutions can be tried.

    1. If you have set any restore points on your Windows 10, try to remove them and see the effect.

Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog > Enter: sysdm.cpl and press ENTER key > On the System Protection tab, select the available disks with protection enabled > Click Customize > Click Turn off system protection or Turn off system protection (in Windows 10) > Click Apply and then click Yes when you receive the next request > Enable system protection for the system drive.

    1. Check and confirm that your external drive has enough free space to back up new files.
    2.  Perform a clean boot on your system.

Temporarily close the third-party security programs and optimization software that may exist under the system (with a firewall nature) > Press and hold Windows logo key +R > Enter: msconfig > Hit Enter > Click on Services > Check to hide Microsoft services > Click Disable All > Reboot the device, and confirm if the problem solved.

Disclaimer: A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It helps to determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program and to isolate the cause of a problem.   These steps of "clean boot" might look complicated at first glance. However, to avoid any trouble for you, please follow them in order and step-by-step so that it will help you get you back on track.

Feel free to keep me updated.

I never used backup software. I go to the control panel, and click on recovery, and that'll take me to file history. System Image Backup will be listed. After clicking that on,the computer looks for a drive to back up to. It searches and usually finds the Toshiba external drive. And the backup begins. But lately at the very end of the backup it'll end with 2 errors and I go from there.

I did download AOMEI Backupper and was able to complete the backup. Because a good few years ago, it wasn't so easy to find software that would backup to an external hard drive. It seemed moreso to download on the internal hard drive. It wasn't so easy to do a backup and save it to an external hard drive

And another issue I am encountering (USB ports are not recognizng the accessory being plugged in)., Or the USB port is not functioning properly, that has happened numerous times.

Thank you very much for mentioning the backup software.

When I purchased my desktop I completely forgot about wanting to use a CD/DVD unit. And reading up on it, I found out that windows 10 doesn't use a CD/DVD unit. Or so this particular article said that. I have always used CD/DVD-RW's.

I also thought about the driver for the unit might need replacing.

Today I backed up using AOMEI backupper and no issues. Tried to do my regular backup using my external drive and the end result was 2 error messages. So the issue remains that I do better using software for thatr purpose.

Thank you for your feedback. I appreciate it.

You haven't told us what software you are using to back up.

I have been backing up to two Toshiba Canvio external hard drives for more than 5 years and have never had a problem. I back up every day. The backup application I currently use is called Macrium Reflect. In the past I have also used Acronis TrueImage, EaseUS To Do Backup, and Shadowprotect Desktop, all with the same Toshiba Canvio external hard drives and with never a problem.

Perhaps you might want to consider using one of those backup applications instead of whatever you're using now.

I've spent the entire morning figuring out how to use prt sc and hopefully it'll work

    Looks like it worked.

    Two different error messages.

I managed to switch usb ports and that worked as well.

I'll let you look at this and hopefully, it will be resolved.

I thank you for your help,

    Ethel Korman

    Hi efkorman,

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

It sounds like you are encountering errors when performing a monthly backup of your Windows 10 to an external hard drive. Sorry for the inconvenience you are experiencing. To understand your situation better and provide you with a more accurate solution, would you like to share some pictures of the error message that popped out? (Pay attention to shield your private info when taking screenshots.)

According to your description, the most probable cause of the issue can be an outdated/corrupted driver.

You can try to update the driver by the way below:

Press Windows + X and open the Device Manager > Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers > Right-click on your external hard drive and select Properties > Click Uninstall > After that, visit the brand manufacturer's official website and download the latest version of the driver and install it.

If the problem still persists, you can also try to re-enable the Volume Shadow Copy Service.

Press Windows + R key and enter services.msc > Click OK > Find Volume Shadow Copy from the list and check its status > If it’s disabled, double-click it to set the status type to Automatic, and click Startto enable it.

The above steps are provided based on the information we have learned so far. I await your update to assist you further if the problem is still there.

    Best regards
