Setting up a Brother MFC-6490CW printer but getting a FEATURE TRANSFER ERROR on Windows 10 64 bit

I have recently obtained an elderly Brother MFC-6490 scanner printer etc. I've downloaded the setup files, can see the printer on my hub but cannot get the drivers etc to download. Each time I try (and I have tried with wifi and with a USB cable) The system starts to install then fails about halfway through (at a guess) with the error:

FEATURE TRANSFER ERROR

REMOTE SETUP_SYSTEM<WINSYSDIR>THE FILENAME, DIRECTORY NAME, OR VOLUME LABEL SYNTAX IS INCORRECT

For the last week, I've been swapping phone calls and emails with Brother tech help without success

I've looked for help but there doesn't seem to be anything directly of use on the community replies. I'm self-taught on PCs and go back to the 1960s with computing. I find the holes in my knowledge these days by tripping over them :-(

My system is running fully updated 64 bit Windows 10 on an HP Pavilion laptop around 6 years old. From poking around on t'Internet I've found that similar problems giving this error are due to a setting on one entry in the registry but don't give the right entry for my problem. While I'd rather not go fiddling with the registry...

If anyone can help me to solve this Ill be very grateful. The printer/scanner is A3 and the whole system cost me very little. I can't afford to buy a new system with these capabilities and in any case I believe in recyling/upcycling and running until it finally dies. It photocopies well :-(

    Hi Carlo,

I eventually realised which alternative you meant and went through hours of waiting while Windows was reinstalled. It was still at it when I went to bed last night. I restarted the system this morning and immediately tried to install the drivers. I got the exact same error!

Does anyone know *HOW* to identify whatever is causing this issue? The error report is so general that I have no obvious way of finding out what the problem is from it.

I have a virtual XP machine on this computer too. I don't allow it to talk to WiFi but I'll see if I can set up the printer via the long USB cable I've just got. On the Win 10 system I just get the same error when I try this...

    Regards

    David

    Hi Carlo,

The problem is that no driver gets installed. I automatically went that route and used every workaround I could think of. without success, before ringing Brother tech help. We've been through everything we can think of together without success. They eventually suggested trying Microsoft.

When I look in printers etc on "Devices and Printers" I can see the brother printer but can't update the driver nor pull down the driver for it. The system simply can't see one to replace, I think. If I look in "Device Manager" The printer's just not present.

The infuriating thing is that the error message is a general one which gives very little information!

    Regards

    David

That was my start point. The error comes when running this software and Brother can't tell me why. That was why I put this question out. THE BROTHER SOFTWARE FAILS AND THEIR TECHNICAL PEOPLE SAY THAT THIS MUST BE A WINDOWS PROBLEM. We've spent a week trying and failing to find out why.

Sorry to shout but I do do all the obvious things first and this reply shows how people fail to read the question.

If only it was THAT simple. Just because I'm in my 70s doesn't make me stupid

    Good Day DavidWalland,

My name is Carlo, I am also using Windows 10 pc and community member like you. Let us work together to sort this out.

Here's the steps you can try.

    -Press Windows key + X

    -Go to Device Manager

    -Expand the Printer

-Look for Printer driver that was installed

    -Right click and Uninstall

Once uninstalled, go to this link and download and install the driver.

    https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadend.asp...

Once downloaded and installed restart and check the printer.

I hope the information above helps. Please let me know how it goes.

Have a wonderful day ahead and stay safe.

    Sincerely,

    Carlo T.
