Can narrator somehow just read text that I have selected?

I'm looking for a way to have selected text read to me with a keyboard shortcut. I can't seem to figure out a way to make Narrator work like this. Its just always trying to read everything on the screen. Is there a way to make Narrator work like this? If not, is there some other piece of software that could run in the background and give me this functionality? The screen readers that my searches are coming up with seem too elaborate for what I'm trying to do.

This has been driving me nuts!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Derrick.

Mac OS has an option that can be toggled within the accessibility setting that just reads whatever text is highlighted with a keyboard shortcut, in whatever application your using. Is there a way to make narrator to work just like this?

I have a really tough time getting narrator to read what I want it to. I spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to get the blue box positioned in the right spot. I don't need it to help me navigate the computer. I just want something that I can use periodically to read a chunk of text to me. Like I said, it wouldn't have to be narrator. I'm just looking for a reliable piece of software that would give me this functionality in windows.

I have figured out how to make Notebook++ to read text, but that requires me to paste said text into Notebook++, so I'm not thrilled with that as a solution either.

Maybe there is something I'm completely missing with narrator, but it seems like it would be pretty cumbersome to use for someone who wasn't using it all the time.
