Is it safe to update BIOS?

Anonymous

I have an HP PC that has a BIOS update available in its software driver section, However, I have heard some reviews where devices got glitched very badly due to BIOS updates. I have an HP PC with AMD Ryzen and its current BIOS works alright. Should I consider patching this new BIOS update available on my device's software drivers' page?

You should always update BIOS because it is 99% security updates especially in the post meltdown and spectre world.

The never update BIOS crowd made up their minds from the old wife's tale 15 years ago --- when they built their own pc and the only motherboard BIOS update changes were BIOS updates to accept more recent CPU's or faster RAM or fix a specific BIOS bug.

Here is the change log of some random ASUS motherboard from 2005. Go ahead and read through the BIOS change log. Yes, if you lived in that world and you didn't have to fix a specific BIOS bug or changing CPU/RAM, I agree 100% that there was no reason to update the BIOS.

Now 99% of all BIOS updates are security updates as it is the only way to fix certain meltdown and spectre security vulnerabilities.

I've never even once had a major issue from BIOS update. Always possible though sure. They also tend to include other bugs. But, I've always updated to the latest BIOS on every computer. Just don't do it during a storm or likely possible power outage period lol.

If anything, its your choice. Do it or not. Sometimes its better to do it for new features or improvements. Mostly at least in recent years, its more of a thing to do than in the past. Its more like Windows updates today. They get various quality of improvements. Like my board is supposedly getting one soon that will enable recent processors on it.

There are those that say don't unless you have a problem and those that say do if you see a need or want to. Considering I haven't lost a board for the past 11 years, I don't see an issue with doing it.

You'll undoubtedly get different opinions. Here's mine:

Certainly don't do it just because it's X years old and there are upgrades available. Although a BIOS upgrade normally goes well, it is not without danger. If something goes wrong while the upgrade is an progress (for example, a lapse in power) you can be left with no BIOS at all, and an unbootable computer.

Do a BIOS upgrade if you need to--because you are having a problem that the new version is known to fix--not just because one is available.

You should always have the most recent BIOS in your computer.

The BIOS is a driver for your motherboard. (Technically, it's called 'firmware.') It improves your motherboard's functioning, which is critical to your computer's operation.

BIOS updates come from your computer's manufacturer, who carefully tests the updates before releasing them. These updates are written specifically for your computer, so always obtain them directly from the computer manufacturer.

(For someone who builds their own computers, BIOS updates come from the motherboard's manufacturer.)

Even so, and like all other software, don't install a BIOS update on the first day it's available. BIOS updates are very reliable, but they are written by humans.

Make sure to follow the computer manufacturer's update instructions very carefully. The best way to install a BIOS update is to download the update to your computer, and then install it from your computer. In general, the best way to perform any operation on a PC is whatever method has the least likelihood of failure, even if that isn't the most convenient method.

F.61 Rev A out. Enhanced security. As I said, most BIOS updates are security related now.

Old wives' tale about never updating BIOS no longer applies in this era.

Make sure all your drivers are update before you update the BIOS. I don't know how HP BIOS update works, but in my system I made sure that I got back to the BIOS setting page and reload the BIOS default settings.

If you have any concerns, you should head to HP's tech forum before you install the BIOS update as that would be more appropriate with their specific BIOS stuff.

That youtube video is full of BS. BOTH his asus motherboard (video at 1:55) and HP laptop BIOS updates (video at 16:16) are for security fixes --- which HP "strongly" recommends that you update

    Hi AnonymousFYIFYI_107,

It really is a personal choice as to whether to install that update, if you are not encountering any errors o problems with your Windows installation, personally, I would install that update, since HP recommend the update.

    Hi AnonymousFYIFYI_107,

I am Dave, I will help you with this.

BIOS updates can do wrong, and especially if the power goes out when you are upgrading the BIOS.

Is Windows indicating you need to upgrade your BIOS, or is it that you have just seen the upgrade listed on the HP website?

If your system is working correctly, there is no real need to flash your BIOS, unless the Windows updates process indicates otherwise, and then usually, Windows updates will upgrade your BIOS automatically.
