Can I clear the Prefetch folder?

Hi,

I have my old laptop and my new laptop. My old laptop gets barely usable so I was trying 5 days to clear it somehow just for fun.

While exploring the Windows folder to find something useful or useless, I found the Prefetch folder. At first it was locked so I clicked Continue to see if it will let me in.

On my old laptop there is 622 files and folders, and the folder itself weights about 200MB(!). On my new laptop, it's only 16MB like nothing.

At first I didn't want to get in here, so in the browser, searching "can I clear the Prefetch folder" doesn't give me any normal results. Everything was about the Prefetch folder, which I know it contains cache for processes if I am saying that right, but not about if I can delete something from it.

And that's why I am here. My question is, can I delete the unusable program files from the Prefetch folder? No, not the folder itself or all its contents. I want to delete the files for programs I already uninstalled, not just uninstalled, uninstalled even their last files until to the last hidden file and registry entry.

The reason why I am afraid to do this is because the folder itself is located at C:\Windows directory, meaning deleting at least one file, and there one component is broken. I just need to know, is it completely safe to delete uninstalled program files from this folder?

A reply and help would be greatly appreciated!

My new laptop (If you need my old laptop specifications, let me know!)

    Good Day Abdulqadir,

My name is Carlo, I am also using Windows 10 pc and community member like you. Let us work together to sort this out.

Yes, feel free to delete the files under prefetch folder to free up some space, I always delete those in my computer, those will not affect any of your files or apps.

You can also perform disk cleanup to free up disk space.

I hope the information above helps.

Have a wonderful day ahead and stay safe.

    Sincerely,

    Carlo T.

    Also, 200MB or 16MB, lol.

200MB on my old laptop and 16MB on my new current one.

    Thank you again! :)

Don't overly clean lol. You can quickly clean out something that breaks Windows. Just use the Windows cleaning tool which includes system files (eg right click drive in File Explorer > properties > disk cleanup; or use disk clean in Settings). Besides this whatever the three or so Windows temp folders allows you to delete is also fine.

Also, 200MB or 16MB, lol. Just leave it. That amount does nothing today. Just one driver could take more than 200MB easy lol. Its so little space today. Just ignore it.

I will not answer this directly. Ignore just about everything else and go about life with one less thing to do :-)
