The icons you are looking for are located in the %SystemRoot%\System32\imageres.dll file. You have to select a icon image which matches the one on the icon in your picture above (Movie, Music, Document, Picture, etc.) The smaller resolution icons are shown in the viewer, the larger ones appear in File Explorer.
Where Are the New Folder Icons Stored?
I've recently installed Windows 11 & moved some of the User folders to another drive.
In doing so, the icons for some of the folders have changed & I would like to change them back to their default icons. I am able to find some of the new icons in the traditional locations, but am unable to find the new icons for the following folders:
Favorites/Links/Saved Games/Searches. Can anyone tell me where these are located, please?
In addition, it seems that the Contacts & Desktop folders have lost the ability to customise them.

2022-01-05T16:25:54+00:00 Hi Sawa,
Thank you for your reply.
I used the following method to change the location of the required folders:
Right-clicked on the selected folders, dragged them over to the new location (different partition, but on the same SSD), then selected "Move here." The icons for some of the folders stayed as they were, but some changed to a simple brown folder icon:
Of the brightly coloured folders, the only one that changed was the green "Downloads" folder, which changed to a plain brown folder icon. I was able to change this back to the default green-coloured folder icon using the "Customise" option.
Of the remaining (brown-coloured) folders with their own icons superimposed, e.g. "Favourites" I recall that they all changed to simple brown folder icons, i.e. without the star or whatever superimposed. In these cases I was unable to find the default icons when using the "Customise" option. I am trying to discover where these icons are located in order to select them if required.
I had the same experience when moving folders in Windows 10, but with that OS I was able to locate & change back to the default icons.
I have since reset the computer, so I can't show any images of what I saw at the time, but I am including an image of the current icons for reference: it is the brown-coloured icons which I am trying to locate...

Thank you for your reply.
I am able to locate the file that you mention, but I am not able to see any "round" icons that seem appropriate.
As a reminder, these are the icons are am trying to locate:
Favorites/Links/Saved Games/Searches
These are shown in the screenshot a few posts above.

2022-01-08T07:45:18+00:00 Hi
Sorry for the late reply.
I tried it on a Windows 11 computer.I found that the moved folder is the same as before with the move method in my last reply.
Such as I want to move the "Favorites", I create a new folder in the destination I want to move to and name it "Favorites" first. Then move the original "Favorite" to the location of the new "Favorite" by going to Properties >Location, and the star on the icon is still there.
And through other moving methods, only display simple brown folder icon after moving.

2022-01-03T07:44:07+00:00 Hi SkyriderUK,
Thanks for your post in Microsoft Community.
It sounds like you are currently having problems while moving the folder under the user to another disk.Sorry for the inconvenience.
To help you solve the problem better, please tell me what changed to the icons? You can provide screenshots of the problem page. (Please take care to protect your privacy.)
Please tell me how did you move the folder? If it is moved by simple copy and paste, some errors may occur. You can try the following steps to move the folder under the C drive user:
- Create a user folder in a suitable location on another disk, and then create folders for Desktop, Downloads, Documents, Pictures, Music, Searches etc. that the same folder as the C drive user folder has.
- This PC > Local Disk(C:) > Users > Select one folder(Such as Pictures) Move each folder separately (OneDrive folder cannot be moved) > Right click to open Properties > Location > Paste the corresponding folder path that you created on the other disk in the first step (Such as F:\Users\account\Pictures) > Move.
For the folders Favorites,Links,Saved Games,Searches you mentioned, you can try to click Restore Default in the "Location".
Or you can try the following steps to repair system files to see if the system files are damaged and cause the problem:
Type CMD in the search box, select the "Command Prompt" and "Run as administrator".Type the following commands in sequence and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup sfc /scannowThen restart the computer.
Feel free to post back if you need further assistance.
