change user/login name?

When installing W10 it asks for the name of the user, I wasn't sure how this was used and entered my full name (:First Last").

Now I see that it uses this for the full user ID, including the "c:/users/username" path.

I want to change that, so that I have C:/users/lastName (no blank in the name).

But I think that the name it used is hard-wired into many places, and in the registry.

I can (did) add a new user with the desired name, but even if I copy all the files over - don't think it is safe to delete the old longer (with a blank!) name.

I see lots of posts on "changing the user name", but that is only the displayed name on login, not the one used internally and in the file system.

Hints?

Related - on another system I created an MSoft connected account, and it truncated the "lastname" I used to the infamous MSoft 5-characters ("lastn"),

Similarly can this be changed to be what it would have been with a local-only account?

    I understand, Guthrie.

    I can help you here further if you need it, or you can ask Shawn directly in the Comments section of his tutorial since he is the top expert on this issue and saved us all a lot of grief with this method to safely change User Profile Folder name.

    Let me know if I can help further. I'll stay subscribed to this thread in case you need anything else, until the system locks it in a few months.

    Hi Guthrie. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

    What's happened with the first five truncate is that when you installed WIndows it was not able to connect to the Microsoft Account so it used the first five letters of the email address as your User Account folder name. I tried to get this changed via MVP channels in the early days of Windows 10 but developers didn't want to change it for some security reason. It was not even able to be changed without ruining WIndows until recently when Shawn Brink came up with a tutorial for how to change the User Folder name. His method is not easy but is a safe way to change the User folder name.

    First if necessary change the User account display name in your MS Account to what you want it to display on the Sign in screen, as shown here:

    https://www.windowscentral.com/how-change-accou....

    If that is enough then, fine, but if you also want your User Account folder at C:\Users to match then to safely change the User Account folder name see here:

    Hello, how are you?

    My name is Paloma B., I am very happy to be able to try to help you in the best possible way.

    I understand that you would like to change the name of your User folder.

    This procedure is not very safe and recommended.

    Changing the name of the user folder can damage it and if you are the only administrator of the computer, lose access completely, needing to reset the entire computer.

    The ideal case if you wanted to correct the folder name is creating a new user with the correct name and after that migrating all the data from the old user to the new one as instructed below.

    1. Press Windows + R keys to open the "Run" window;
    2. Copy and paste the command

    netplwiz

    and press ok;

    1. Click on the "Add" option;
    2. Select the option "Do not sign in to a Microsoft account";
    3. Choose a name and password for this profile and then proceed;
    4. After the new profile is created, go back to the "User Accounts" screen, click on your user and then on "Properties". Select the "Group Membership" tab;
    5. Mark the profile as Administrator and click on Ok;
    6. Login with the new account;

    If necessary, copy and paste the files from the old account to the new account:

    1. Press "Windows flag" key + E to open File Explorer;
    2. In File Explorer, select "This Computer" in the left column;
    3. Under "This Computer", select "WIndows (C:)";
    4. Among the presented folders, select the "Users" folder;
    5. Accessing the "Users" folder, select and access the folder with the name of your old account;
    6. Open the folders inside the folder with the name of your old account, and copy the files to your new account.

    Important: You must OPEN THE FOLDERS in your old account and COPY THE FILES to the new account, it's no use trying to copy the folders.

    After migrating your data, delete your previous user:

    1. Press Windows+R keys to open the Run window, type

    netplwiz

    and click OK;

    1. Select your previous user and click Remove.

    If you really want to change the folder name without recreating it, you can find more information on this procedure at the link below.

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/89060-chang...

    I await news.

    If these procedures helped you in any way, please click on "I solved my problem" and also mark as an answer, so you can help others users.
