Downloading WhatsApp media to pc

I was in previous years able to download images and other media from WhatsApp by connecting my phone and transferring files onto PC. I can still do this but have found the majority of the files cannot be opened. I'm using Windows 11. Error messages say the codec to play the audio can't be found or the file type is not supported. I have contacted WhatsApp for help but they have answered four times with completely inappropriate or irrelevant answers which make me think they are just sending templates without reading my query or it is just a bot response. Can anyone help with this?

This is the website that provides the download that I sent you

Usually, pictures are opened on the Photos app or another photo viewer app, when you try to open the pictures, are they opening in Windows Media player?

I suspect that these files are corrupted, try opening them on another computer and check if they open correctly on the other computer.

    Hi M1cm0m-,

I'm Rodrigo and I will help you.

Some Whatsapp audio files need additional codecs, probably this is your problem.

Download and install the codec pack from the link below, it will fix your problem with codecs.

Thanks I will try this and update as to how it goes. I am a bit concerned if what you have sent me is safe to download to my computer? Is there a website you can direct me to so that I can see for myself where you obtained this?

What about being unable to open images? All of the images transferred from WhatsApp are coming up as an unsupported file but no info or tip as to what I should use to open the file. Shouldn't Windows Media Player open these?
