How to use Old MS Photo Editor Program in Windows 10

How to get the old MS Photo Editor program to run on Windows 10?

I know MS Photo Editor (PhotoEd.exe) is a very old program but I use it daily. It loads very fast and has the basic tools I need such as Crop, Resize, and Rotate. I loaded it on my Windows 7 desktop and when I upgraded to Windows 10, surprisingly it still works. I tried loading it onto my new Windows 10 computer and it will not work. So, here is my question: Is there a way I can copy my MS Photo Editor program on my old Win7 upgraded to Win10 computer and paste it into my new Windows 10 computer? Is there something in the Win7/Win10 registry for MS Photo Editor that needs to be copied and pasted into the new Win10 computer.

If it works in the old Win7 upgraded to Win10 computer, there may be a way of getting it to work in my new Win10 computer.... I HOPE.

Thank you for your help. PS: I know there are other programs out there but they are large and slow to load. MS Photo Editor loads VERY quickly and does what I need it to do.

    Hi Echo,

Thanks for using Microsoft products and posting in the community.

If I have misunderstood your question, please feel free to correct me.

I understand your problem is that you want to use the MS Photo Editor program from Win7 on your Win10 computer.

There is no MS Photo Editor Program on Win10 anymore, and you can't copy your MS Photo Editor Program from Win7 to your Win10 computer and paste it into your new Windows 10 computer, so we recommend you to use the photo editor that comes with Win10 system.

I hope the information provided is useful to you, Feel free to post back if you need further assistance.

    Best Regards,

The new photo editor that comes with the new windows 10 sucks! There no sharpening feature or color saturation slide. You have to jump from tab to tab to get even close to a decently edited photo.

Please re-do the old Windows photo editor and make it available to the public.

    Hi Microsoft,

Sometimes users just want to be able to perform a simple task efficiently. Many times over the past 20 years I have seen so-called "upgrades" trying to do too much, and trying to ask their users to do more, when more is not needed nor wanted.

Why not stick to the tried-and-true philosophy of "Keep It Simple Stupid"?

I too miss the old MS Photo Editor and I'll be doing whatever I can to re-install it on my PC with or without Microsoft's help.

    Best Regards,

    Matt.

    Hi Matt,

If you find a way of getting it to work on a new Windows 10 install, please post back here on how you did it. I can't seem to get an answer to my actual question from Microsoft. They just say it can't be done and suggest using another program. Since MS Photo Editor works on my Windows 10 computer that was upgraded from Windows 7, you would think that one of the techs at MS would be able to give me an answer on how that works. It may be something as simple as getting the right files from the registry on the Windows 10 computer that was upgraded from Windows 7 and putting them in the correct registry on the new Windows 10 computer.

    Cheers,

    Mike

Thank you for the reply Oliviaq,

I was hoping that you or someone else could answer the second part of my question. I installed MS Photo Editor on my Windows 7 computer and it worked fine. I upgraded that Windows 7 computer to Windows 10 and the MS Photo Editor program continued to work fine. So my Windows 10 computer is able to run MS Photo Editor. Something is allowing it to work correctly on my Windows 10 computer.

I am not a computer technician but I have seen some older programs that would work on newer operating systems by copying certain lines from the Registry of the older computer and writing them in the correct location on the newer computer and sometimes running the program in "Compatibility Mode".

Does anyone know how to do this with MS Photo Editor? I know that there are other programs, including the program that comes installed with Windows 10, which is very slow to load and does not suit my needs as well as MS Photo Editor.

Since MS Photo Editor can work on one Windows 10 computer (that was upgraded from Windows 7), I was really hoping that someone would know how to get it to work on a new Windows 10 computer.

Thank you very much for your help.

Thanks for the suggestion Bill, I tried it but just got the same error message "No file format information can be found in the registry" and "Unknown file format." I don't know much about the registry. Do you know how I can find the files for MS Photo Editor in the old registry and how I would go about copying them and pasting them into the correct place in the new Windows 10 computer? Thanks.
