In VMWare infrastructure on-premise setup, we have VMs with MS SQL Server 2016 Standard/Enterprise Edition . We plan to upgrade operating system to MS SQL Server 2019 Standard/Enterprise Edition.
Can the existing license for MS SQL Server 2016 Standard/Enterprise Edition be reused after migrating to MS SQL Server 2019 Standard/Enterprise Edition?

    Hi @Sunil Deshpande ,

The answer is No. You need to buy SQL server 2019 Standard/Enterprise license for your new SQL server 2019 Standard/Enterprise Edition.
Different SQL server version has different SQL server license. SQL server 2016 license can only be used for SQL server 2016. SQL server 2019 license can only be used for SQL 2019.

Licenses are always bound to the product version, so you have to purchase new license.
