I am having apps that are stuck in task manager and an update that is stuck at 20% installing and other issues with it.

Hello Community,

NOTE: Please don't send automated replies instead send real solutions after properly reading my issues and understanding whats happening as I have come here after trying out all the things in the first page of google search results.

I am frustrated lately because of a number of issues in my custom built computer.

There were no issues until recently there was a cumulative update for my computer, running windows 10 pro 64 bit.
I am listing all the weird issues that I'm facing in detail here.

  • Update stuck on installing 20%. I tried deleting softwareDistribution folder, tried pausing and restarting update, tried to reset updates via a batch file named Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components.bat but nothing has happened so I have paused the updates for now.
  • There is a Windows Module Installer worker task which takes 10% cpu and cannot be ended or terminated with taskkill or end task in task manager. I somehow got rid of it temporarily by force shutting down pc with power button and then starting it.

Now I am listing all the weird issues that I THINK are associated with the above issues:

  • While deleting a wordpress folder/ temp folder / %temp% folder, the deletion process randomly gets stuck at some percentage and again the task cannot be killed by ANY MEANS other than force shut down.
  • One wordpress site opens on localhost while another does not, this is fixed after a force shut down start over.
  • Discord not opening.
  • While adding files to archive (making a zip) the process gets stuck at some percentage and the 7-zip GUI gets stuck in task manager and cannot be killed by ANY MEANS other than force shut down.
  • There are few more processes in task manager which are stuck around and cannot be removed NO MATTER WHAT I DO maybe except force shut down.
  • I have referred the internet and tried checking the disk by chkdsk but it does not generate report, I run WMIC something command and both my drives show 'OK'.
  • So at this point my only option remains to force shut down every time I want to clear my task manager. PC is running fine I am able to use stuff but there is something that is not right, and I want it figured out and fixed.

At this point I am not sure what and where exactly the problem is, and even if I want to show this to someone their only option will be to format the pc, I want this issue to be thoroughly diagnosed, I would be glad if anyone is willing to help out, thank you.

    Hello Lynn,

The problem I mentioned above has once again started occurring after the in-place upgrade, I don't understand where the problem is exactly, some of the browser processes getting stuck in the task manager preventing their programs from opening, I don't have a clue where the problem is arising exactly please provide a solid solution, my pc is getting harder to use.

    Hi MohitBhavsar,

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

To understand your situation better, I'd like to confirm the source of your current Windows 10 pro 64 bit.

And based on your detailed description, I suggest you perform an in-place update of your Windows 10 and see if the problem is resolved. (This is a non-destructive repair of the system, which is different from reinstalling the system. Normally, installed applications remain the same and update the system to the latest version.)

    1. Click hereto create the installation media.
    2. After the creation tool is created, go to Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates. (it is recommended to back up important data to avoid data loss)

    Note:

    • Your system disk may require 15-20G of free space.
    • It is recommended to back up important data to avoid data loss.

Feel free to let me know how it goes!

The inplace upgrade was successful, it completed over many hours (7-8), now the windows seems to be working fine, it is taking updates and everything seems to be normal, I will keep an eye on the weird issues that I had previously, until then I thank you for your solution.

Hi, thank you for taking the time to reply

I did download the media tool and again the progress gets stuck after initial 100% -> Verify -> Progress Stuck at 18% other scenario

initial 100% -> verify 100% -> progress 100% -> Gets stuck at checking for updates. I will try it once again after a force shut down and restart and will update if it lets me go any further.
