VERY slow Windows 10 32 bit

W10 32 bit upgrade from W7, 8GB RAM installed (yes, only 3.5GB used) 500GB HDD, 380GB free. It's a old Dell Vostro system with obsolete m/b video chip, replaced with PCI-e Nvidea NVS300 and driver.

Problem was - W10 taking up to 5 minutes or more to become usable. It still is, to a slightly lesser degree.

Previous suggestions suggested the obsolete video chip was the culprit. another was the swap file size.

Have installed the Nvidea NVS300 card (which is recognised by W10) and updated the driver, but there's no noticeable improvement.

Did a really good disk cleanup / defrag which reduced boot time to 1 min 47 secs, but it's still another 2 mins before applications respond to mouse-click to open.

Swap file was 1500 (system recommended 1312) but changing to 1312 created even longer times. Knowing that 1500 mb wasn't helpful I doubled it to 3072, which did reduce the boot time by almost 30 seconds ( now 1.17 as stated).

If anyone has any suggestions ... ?

Two hours later ... Backup failure. Smart defrag reported need, so defeated, am running backup again. Don't expect it to finish (if it does) before about 10pm. If it fails again, will switch target HDD.

Sorry Carlo - my system was already clean, but you clearly want the reassurance of Malwarebytews. Ran it - it came up with 64 PUPs all related to cleaning routines already installed - all 64 now quarantined.

    No malware or viruses.

Did "hid MS processes", tried to disable the remaining few as instructed. One was MS, one was Avast AV, forget the last but was similar - none of the 3 would allow disablement.

Noticed that Chrome had "17" alongside it in Task Manager, so I stopped the process in Task Manager prior to shut down.

Restart - it took a full 7 minutes before I could get the email manager to open - same as or slightly worse than before.

Going offline now for the night (it's 6,45pm) may see a reply on my tablet if you respond but can't do anything about it till tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for help to date, pity we've not improved it so far.

    Good Day Silvabod,

I appreciate your time getting back to this thread, it appears that Chrome and other third party apps taking most of the usage.

First, try to scan your computer using the free version of Malwarebytes scanner to check if there are malware or rootkits running in your system.

    Here's the link to download.

    https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/thank...

Once downloaded and installed open the app and perform a scan and check for infection.

Once done proceed with these steps.

-Click Start, type Task Manager and open it

    -Click on Processes Tab

    -Look for Windows Explorer

    -Right click and hit Restart.

    Restart your computer using cleanboot.

    Restart and observe the performance.

Have a wonderful day ahead and stay safe.

    Sincerely,

    Carlo T.

WINVER Version 21H2 OS Build 19044.1706

This is what I got from Snip -

Sorry, having great difficulty - error, hardware doesnt support saving video, and I cant get past the one Snipping Tool clip, first page here. Do you need more ? (I did resort to camera phone, sending pics via email, they came out as HTML links. I'm a novice at sending pics, guessing that HTML is not a picture format, is it ?
