Problem with Win10 "Search and Indexing".

Hi,

I discovered this by trying to search for a particular image in a directory of images and it wasn't found even though it was there. I even tried searching for *.jpg which returns "No files found".

I used the "Search and Indexing" troubleshooter and found it was not running although the "detailed" information didn't say anything wasn't working. I I used the "Try these repairs..." and it fixes the problem, supposedly.

However, if you check again a couple of minutes later, it is not working again.

Any thoughts on what might be wrong ?

Thanks, Graham.

    Greg,

I am only using File Explorer to do the searches.

I have now tried moving my test folder of 4 Jpegs all around the system and testing by searching for *.*; I either get the 4 files displayed or "No Files Found".

What I have discovered is that the search works everywhere apart from the "Users" folder. Anywhere below that, nothing will be found. Tried under specific user data and also directly under the top level, i.e. at the same level that all the different user accounts start from.

So it has to be something to do with that top level "user" account.

I've attached a screen shot of the indexing path on my C: drive and shows that the are selected.

This makes we wonder if it's not at indexing issue but something else.

    Regards,

    Graham.

    Graham -

Have you tried the search in File Explorer? How about narrowed there to the folders in question, or your User account name?

Hi Graham. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

    1. Try all of these fixes to get WIndows 10 Search working properly:

    https://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/wind...

    https://www.techradar.com/how-to/how-to-fix-sea...

    http://www.askvg.com/fix-windows-search-crashes...

    https://superuser.com/questions/1218170/incorre...

    1. Make sure all locations you want searched are included following this guide:

    https://www.howtogeek.com/272158/how-to-choose-...

    1. Then rebuild the Search Index to see if it fixes it:

    https://www.techjunkie.com/how-to-solve-windows...

    1. Usually one of the above will do it, but if not go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files, and also Step 16 to test a new Local Admin account. Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

    1. If nothing else works then do a Repair Install, by installing Media Creation Tool, open tool and choose to Upgrade Now. This reinstalls Windows while keeping files, programs and most settings in place, and is also the most stable method to advance to the latest version. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
