Do all SSDs work in laptops?

I'm wondering if all NVMe SSDs work on laptops, because I've heard that not every laptop supports all NVMe SSDs, but I can't piece together why, and I would like to know if I can install any NVMe SSD in my laptop, and it'll work. I'm not talking about the physical size, I'm talking about the manufacturer of the NVMe SSD and model. Can I install any SSD in my laptop and it'll work? (in my laptop's second NVMe slot)

There is a Drive and RAM manufacturer that guarantees compatibility.

Run the Crucial scanner to view available drive replacement options.

Please run the scanner and then post a URL / link into this thread.

If you see NVMe options then you know that Crucial has already confirmed compatibility.

If you do not see NVMe options then you may be able to open a chat with Crucial.

If it is the right type it should work. Notice the difference in the end connector - has to have the same type m.2 or nvme connector on the laptop.

They aren't the same but many people think they are so I'm guessing that is the majority of problems people have. I love Samsung drives for two reasons - I love the data migration utility that works transferring an image to any samsung I've got and so far no compatability issues.

I remember with windows 8.1 you might have to download a driver for some motherboards to work with the SSD brand. I have not encountered that with Win10. I haven't found any that require firmware updates for the motherboard but I certainly haven't used ever motherboard.

I mean from the software/drivers. I understand the physical size scheme. Likewise, I just want to know if the firmware is compatible

Yes, firmware would work the same in a laptop as in a Desktop. It doesn't know the difference.

Hi m0ke0. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

Most 2.5 SSD's fit in laptops, but NvME needs more specfication to be sure. Good articles here:
