McAfee LifeSafe vs Microsoft Defender

My new computer came with McAfee LiveSafe installed. I have Windows 11. McAfee is due to expire and would like to know if Windows Defender will do the same thing? Is there a cost to Windows Defender or is it part of the operating system? Does Defender work with other web browsers such as Chrome?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Momo_54,

Good day! I'm John Dev a Windows user like you and I'll be happy to assist you today. I know this has been difficult for you, Rest assured, I'm going to do my best to help you.

Microsoft has made some great improvements and developments over the last few years when it comes to Windows Defender making it a great security software these days. It will not slow your PC, it is Free and will work for most of the web browsers like Chrome. I recommend not to renew your subscription with McAfee and start using Microsoft's built-in Security software.

Kindly let me know if this helps or if you have any further concerns.

    Kind regards,

    John DeV

Microsoft Defender provides you full Anti-Malware protection and there are several devices which are using Microsoft Defender and they are doing fine. In case you want to use Microsoft Defender, make sure uninstall McAfee and restart your PC and Microsoft Defender should take over as your default Anti-Malware product. Microsoft Defender is free of charge. You don't have any add-on or extension for Microsoft Defender but in case you download any malicious file, then Microsoft Defender will detect and remove it no matter what browser are you using.

Many OEM manufacturers provide (bundle) promotional or Pre-installed software on computers as part of their software package. It is not uncommon for a computer manufacturer to partner or enter into an agreement with well known software vendors to include their product as part of a marketing strategy for generating revenue. Marketing and promotional strategies are built into the security vendor's business model as part of their operating costs. Bottom line...it's all about increasing profits and finding new and creative ways to do so.

For example, some anti-virus and security vendors provide free trial versions of their products as part of a marketing strategy for generating revenue. This allows the user to receive the benefit of a fully working (Premium or Pro) version for a limited time in order to experience all features and functionality. When the trial period expires, the user will have to either remove the software or purchase the full version in order to keep using the software. However, if the product involves a security scanner, it typically reverts to it's free mode and can continued to be used as a stand-alone scanner without the benefits of real-time protection.

The same typcally applies to other trial software when the trial period expires.

Since you are using Windows 11, just use Windows Defender Antivirus (Windows Security Center (WSC). I explain why in this topic. Also see my comments about Windows Defender Antivirus in Choosing an Anti-Virus Program.
