Black screen before login, ”Time & Date not set, F1: boot”

Hello,

I know black screen is a highly asked question here, however non of the answers I’ve seen here has been successful in solving my problem.

I have an HP Pavilion Desktop running Windows 10. When I try to boot it I first get a black screen with some system information and it days ”Date & Time not set. F1: boot”. When I press F1 it leeds to the windows logo for and a circle for a minute then proceedes to a black screen with a cursor.

I’ve changed the CMOS battery, without any difference. I can’t reach Task Manager, and still get black screen when I try to boot it in safe mode.

Does anyone have any idea on fixes/causes? The CPU is just half a year old, the harddrive is a year old SSD. The rest of the computer is from 2015.

    I am Dave, I will help you with this.

    That F1 boot error indicates an error in your BIOS, did you replace the CMOS battery with a new one?

    Boot your PC into BIOS, find the option to restore defaults, and apply that setting, save and exit BIOS.

    If that does not stop the F1 screen

    Disconnect your Pc from the mains electricity

    Press and hold the power button on the case of your PC for 30 seconds

    Wait 10 minutes

    Then reconnect to the mains electricity and start your PC, do you still get that F1 screen?

    With regards to the black screen with cursor when booting into Windows are you able to boot into the Recovery Environment using the steps below and if yo can, which of the recovery options have you tried and what was the result?

    Start your PC, just as Windows attempts to load (spinning dots), press and hold Power Button for 5 - 10 seconds to perform a Hard Shut Down

    Do this twice

    On the third start Windows will boot into the Recovery Environment and from there you can access System Repair, Safe Mode, Command Prompt... etc.

    Yes, I have replaced the CMOS battery and restored it to default settings without any luck.

    I tried your second tip but unfortunately still get the same F1 screen.

    I can enter recovery mode however no luck in booting up in safe mode. I’ve tried to search for problems and entered some commands in the command promt such as chkdsk but with no luck.

    I tried to recover BIOS by pressing windows key + B during startup. The bios started beeping, 2 long beeps followed by 2 short beeps and screen remains black. Some people say that’s code for a corrupted BIOS. I don’t know how to proceed.

    I can only see serial number and Product. No which is: P1K00EA#UUW

    Then below that it says: HP Pav 550-115no DT PC NRL

    Hi Fredrik,

    Your system does seem to have a problem in BIOS, not in Windows.

    Below is the support page for your PC on the HP website, there are BIOS updates available on there, I do not know if you can install one of those from outside Windows

    If you cannot install one of those BIOS updates, you will need to take your PC to the Repair shop, they may have a way too re-flash your BIOS.
