I have something called a zip file? I'm not that much into computers as I'm a senior citizen and I came late to the use of computers. I would like to know how to move this zip file? to an email. Any help would be appreciated. Please keep it simple for me. Technical jargon will not help. Thank you very much.

Not to worry - it's not at all complicated!

In computer language, a 'zip' file has been compressed. That means a technique has been applied to make the file occupy less space on your hard drive while remaining the same in every other way. In effect, the file has gone on a diet.

Attaching a zip file to an email message is the same as attaching any other type of file. Every email program is a little different, but they all have a symbol somewhere that looks like a paper clip. (A younger person never heard of a paper clip.) Just click on that paper clip and a window will open that allows you to search for the file you want to attach.

When you've found the zipped file, either double-click on it or click once and select Open. When you do that, a copy of the file will attach itself to your email. It usually takes a few seconds for this to happen.

If a compressed file is 'zipped' what do you call it when it's uncompressed? Why, 'unzipped' of course! 😉

Hi Holly. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

A zip file is a compressed file that's opened in File Explorer by choosing Extract file. Illustrated here: https://www.howtogeek.com/668409/how-to-zip-and...

You can attach it to an email just like any other file, either as a zip or extracted zip. Just address the email and choose to Attach a file, browse to the file and select it.

If you don't see this in your mail app, just let me know which one you use and I'll find illustrations for it. If you open your mail in a browser, most make the Attach File button pretty obvious when you are in the email compose window.

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.
