High latency problems causing audio cracklings and pops

Hello,

I'm asking for help with my computer. I have audio pops and cracklings, with a small persistent background noise which really looks like interferencies (I hear it louder when I move my mouse).

I am using a headset wired with a jack 3.5 cable, so I hear the interferences, but not with other headsets wired on USB port, though the cracklings and pops still appear whether I am wired on USB or jack port.

I did a check with LatencyMon which resulted in high latency in every field mesured as you can see before :

The main drivers that are executing for too long are graphic drivers, and more rarely network drivers :

Currently I haven't solved it after trying a lot of possible resolutions that I will try to list below :

  • did a clean factory reset of Windows 11
  • disabled CPU throttling
  • manually updated all drivers on the computer
  • disabling devices that may cause the problem like Intel; Realtek or NVIDIA drivers
  • tried modifying some settings like setting my main GPU as default GPU, setting high performance modes (in NVIDIA control panel and in the power settings of windows) and some others that I forgot (but none of these have worked so far).

I can try to do a check with windows SDK but I never did it so I will have to check for it.

I am using a studio headset so I don't know if the problem can be caused by a hardware issue on the motherboard (I don't have any sound card) and if I should buy one or some device to control the sound output without capturing the interferences, or if it is a software issue.

I have found a lot of topics about this issue but never found any relevant or reliable solution, so I'll try there, hope someone will be able to help me (I am not an expert with all that concerns drivers or system files so I prefer not to try modifying registries or others sensible elements).

I still can return it but I prefer to do it as a last resort.

    Hello and a first of all I want to say a big thanks to you for giving me all these tips.

    I have tried almost all the solutions you gave me, and I will give you a feedback about what has changed and what hasn't (because yes, my problem are solved in part but there are some issues remaining even after having followed all these steps).

    First of all, after resetting my Windows system, updating ALL drivers, BIOS and applications on my computer, my latency problems are almost gone (there are rarely some peaks that remain for example when I launch an application that is pretty heavy, some graphic drivers are still executing for too long).

    These pops are appearing when I launch a game or when I come back to chrome and it loads all the tabs that were unloaded, that is to say when the PC is doing heavy loadings or operations.

    The remaining problems are there, and they seem detached from the previous issue. Sometimes, when I'm watching a video (when I'm playing there are absolutely no problems) the sound starts crackling, and it disappears if I unplug and replug my headset. It is especially loud when I'm playing a game, but it is strange because in the game there are NO issues, but when I ALT + TAB to come back to my desktop (with the game in background) the cracklings are really louder than when there is nothing in background.

    I want to specify that I tried on two other computers and there were no problems, no cracklings, no pops, absolutely perfect sound, so it is coming from the computer and not from the headphones.

    Updating the drivers seems to have resolved the loud pops but the cracklings are still present as they were before, so I think it is a different problem because it may have changed at least a bit if the drivers were the cause of the issue (it's just my point of view).

    But I discovered something odd for me about the small static noises in my headphones, tell me what you think of that :

    I tried putting the sound output in my screen to see if the issues were still there, and when I disabled my headphones, the static sound was still here (when the sound was in my coming out from my screen and not from the headphones), and when I was moving the mouse the noises were louder, so it really looks like interferences, but it doesn't seem to come from the softwares or the drivers because the issue would have disappeared when the headphones were disabled, haven't it ? Maybe a hardware problem ? Can it come from a defective jack port or cable ?

    As JosephT71 said above, it can come from my wifi router but if it was the case can these interferences coming from the router be impacted by the mouse ?

    I started considered returning my product, because I estimate that you shouldn't have to do such reparations under any circumstances espacially when you buy a computer at a high price.

    Thank you for you answer, but I don't think it is exactly my problem.

    I may have incorrectly explained it, but I have these static sounds ONLY when I am using my headset plugged on a jack port (which is more sensible I suppose because it is done for audio not as USB ports). But when I plug a headset on a USB port I have no static sounds, but the cracklings still remain. I think these are two different problems, the cracklings seems to be due to my really high latency.

    Furthermore, all my setup is wired, I use an ethernet connection and I have no wireless device.

    My internet router has wifi activated, it is at something like 5-6 meters from my computer but not at the same stage, and anyway I have both wifi and bluetooth disabled on my computer, I never use them.

    Can it still be the fault of my router ? And if that's the case what can I do ? I don't think putting aluminium around my computer will be a reliable solution.

    1. The Display and Sound drivers are so important here that merely updating it is sometimes not enough. So let's try everything possible to get it working correctly:

    First make sure you have updated the Display and sound drivers from the PC or Display adapter maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag - from the sticker on the PC.

    While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS/UEFI firmware (very important), network, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

    Remove the old display driver using DDU https://www.wagnardsoft.com/content/ddu-guide-t... if necessary installing in Safe Mode with Networking (so you have internet), or Safe Mode, accessed by one of these methods: https://winaero.com/how-to-boot-windows-11-in-s...

    For driver issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver. You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.

    Then you will know you've tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.

    Adjust the screen resolution until it fits and looks best at Settings > System > Display.

    Then expedite all WIndows Updates including Optional to see if it pushes Monitor or other enabling drivers.

    Check for a monitor driver by expediting Windows Updates (including Optional Updates) in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for Updates to install all Updates until no more are offered.

    1. Expedite install of all Windows Updates in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for Updates, including needed restarts, then go back to check again until no more are offered.

    Then go into Microsoft Store app > My Library > Get Updates and expedite all Store app Updates, too, until no more are offered.

    Sign into the new account, test it works correctly, if so move files over, test all apps work or reinstall any that don't. Then when ready delete the old account in Settings > Accounts > Family & Other Users.

    You can change it to your Microsoft account if desired in Settings > Accounts > Your Info > Sign in with a Microsoft Account Instead.

    1. Download, install and run a full scan with free Malwarebyes from https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/ after enabling Root Kit scan in Scan Settings. Clean Up anything it finds and then run again. Turn off Real Time trial in Control panel to keep as on-demand scanner.

Keep in mind you also have a one year manufacturer's support, repair and replacement warranty that comes with any hardware so if problems persist you can call on the PC manufacturer's Support to fix or replace it, making sure it gets done soon enough so you can ensure the repairs work in time for the warranty expiration, or extend it. The PC may also still be under Store return policy, I would contact the manager who will often try to help.

    RF interference can also come from fluorescent light, but I don't think you have a RF interference issue.

    There is also a 60 Hz humming noise from the grounding issue of electrical outlets, but I don't think you have this issue as well. But to be sure you can move your whole pc to a different location to eliminate the RF interference and 60 Hz cycle humming as your problem.

    High latency problem is hard to diagnose, go through all the device drivers and see if there are updates.

    If both USB and 3.5mm has static noise, then it may be wifi router interference and bluetooth mouse interference.
