Task Scheduler - Batch File

Anonymous
2022-06-19T18:42:56+00:00

I am attempting to use Task Scheduler to run a batch file automatically every day. I am following instructions that I found on the Web. As far as I can tell I have set up Task Scheduler correctly, the only problem being that it doesn't run! I have uploaded screenshots of the properties that have been set up in the hope that these will assist someone in troubleshooting the problem, although I have no clue where they uploaded to!

    Greg:

    Here is my report back:

    https://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-task-sch...

Task Scheduler stops automatically Not the Problem

Task Scheduler is not running  Followed the checks.  TS is running.  Not only that, My particular TS instance is running Task Scheduler failed to start task for user  Yes!  That is the problem!.  BUT Windows Services shows ...ts Running and Automatic

https://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/task...How to Fix Windows Task Scheduler Not Running on Windows 10.  Since it is proved to be running, not much point in going any further

    https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/2271137-...

Some windows tasks not firing on schedule. Pretty generic. Hard to pick anything specific out of it

    https://superuser.com/questions/1435048/windows...

Philosophical treatise on whether a task has "Missed" or has "Failed".  Accompanied by some commentary about what needs to be in the various sections of the TS script, all of which are there

Please don't do any more research on my problem. I do appreciate your efforts on my behalf. I have finally come to terms with the realization that nobody is going to actually review the way I set up Task Scheduler and tell me what I did wrong. Also, I don't have time to spend going through any more links that tell me the steps that need to be followed to set up Task Scheduler. I already followed those steps.

I need to get the job working, so I have abandoned Task Scheduler and have included the necessary steps in my batch file to detect when the time of day reaches the target and then run my backup automatically. And then to wait until the same time the next day and then run it again, And so on.

Once again, thanks for your efforts. Sorry it didn't work out, but I had to move on.

Okay, so I have collaborated in the hope that this will give you sufficient information for you to be able to proceed with the case.

Here is my report on each of the links you sent me:

    https://www.gotothings.com/others/using-x-copy-...

The only pertinent item in this is “ 3) Use the Windows Task Scheduler and create a task to schedule it at time when you are likely to power on your computer.

Start -> Programs -> Accessories - System Tools -> Task Scheduler”

    https://www.ubackup.com/synchronization/schedul...

Tells me to use Robocopy.  I’m already using xcopy.  This does not address my problem.

Tells me the steps to use to set up Task Scheduler.  Which I have already done.  This is my problem!! – Task Scheduler apparently doesn’t kick off at the time I have scheduled.  WHY?

    https://tips.timscomputer.com/windows-tip-batch..

Shows me a batch  script to do a backup.  I already have a script that exactly satisfies my requirement.  I don’t see the need to replace it with another that doesn’t address my particular backup requirement,  Would you please explain to me why I should?

    https://techleader.pro/a/25-Running-scheduled-b...

Explains why backups are needed – which I know.

Tells me all about xcopy – which I know

Goes through the steps to set up Task Scheduler – which I have done

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPrxgxsntB

A fascinating chance to watch a video on xcopy and an explanation on how to set up Task Scheduler – Do I need to make a comment?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ilDhyOGPo4

Another video, this one with a music track, on how to set up xcopy and Task Scheduler.  Almost impossible to follow.

I don't know why the above graphics are displayed. I tried to get rid of them, but they persist!

So, now I have spent way over an hour wasting my time and learning nothing new.

To summarize:  I have a batch file that does exactly what I want.  I have set up Task Scheduler following the directions that I have now seen repeatedly.  The Task Scheduler does not activate the batch file.

To be clear, it seems to me that I must have made some mistake in setting up Task Scheduler so, at this stage, if you agree, could you please review the information I sent you about the properties of my instance of Task Scheduler to see if you can see where I went wrong?

    Thank you.

i would like to believe, Greg, that what we have here is a simple miscommunication, because IU am certainly not accustomed to being addressed in the tone you are using.

To begin with, I posted a question seeking help with Task Scheduler because I wanted to automate the running of a batch program every day at a certain time.. I had set up Task Scheduler the best I could using instructions I had found on the Web, but the program didn't run at the time that had been set. The conclusion was that Task Scheduler wasn't working,

I only mentioned that the batch file was for backup as a matter of interest, but you sent me a bunch of links relating to scripting batch files, which I didn't need. Of course I wasn't interested in trying them and reporting back to you.

That's why I replied: "I don't understand why I should seek scripting help. My batch file works perfectly. All I want is to be able to have it run automatically."

I added " It is not a straight copy - there are various comparisons involved." because you seemed to be hung up on whether I should be using my own batch program instead of finding a pre-written one"

And, I mentioned I am using xcopy. only because you specifically asked me.

Here is probably the first misunderstanding: You asked "Are you following these steps to use Task Scheduler to run a batch script: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-create-and-r...

Because my interest was in steps to set up Task Scheduler and your link was incomplete I assumed it to refer to Task Scheduler and I knew I wasn't using it, I replied with the link I was using (for Task Scheduler). And sent you the screenshots reflecting the Task Scheduler properties that I had set up.

So now, if you feel like dropping the case, feel free!

Hi John. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

Are you following these steps to use Task Scheduler to run a batch script:

    https://www.windowscentral.com/how-create-and-r...

To show us your screenshots, save them to a place you can find them and then attach using Attach Image button in reply box:
